Show NQUIRE ABOUT EATON Four Members the School Board Go to Ogden II I I II I 1 BAMBERGER TALKS OF VISIT I I I 1I 1 I H yes the Result of Their Investigations In-vestigations as Very Favorable to Mr Eaton The Professor Drinks Beer Occasionally With His Meals I but Would Quit that if He Came to Salt Lake as Principal of tho I High School How the Board I Stands Simon Barnberger W J Newman Oscar W Mole and B S Young members mem-bers of the Board of Education yesterday yester-day went to Ogden to make an I Investigation as to the charges against V George A Eaton the Ogden teacher I who Is an applicant for the principal ship of the Salt Lake high school After i their return home last night Mr DarnV berger was seen and in regard to the matter said We were in Ogden today and after making Inquiries of some twentyreputable people I used to live I in Ogden and I think I know the town V I can only say that from what we learned there the accusations against Mr Eaton are without foundation Further Fur-ther everybody whom we saw spoke very highly of Mr Eatons qualifications qualifica-tions as a teacher WOULD FOLLOW EATON HERE A prominent railroad official told me at Ogden that Mr Eaton was worthy of tho position and that we would make a mistake if wodldnot secure his services Superintendent Baker of the Pullman company who formerly lived in Salt Lake told mo that his son had been In the Salt Lake schools and had been under Mr Eaton at Ogden and that he had made much better progress with his studies in Ogden Og-den than ho did In Salt Lake Mr Baker said that if Mr Eaton secured the position 1 hero he Baker would move to Salt Lake Mr Baker also told me of a railway engineer who had two sons in the Ogden schools who would move here in case we employed Mr Eaton I wan told that Mr Eaton Is an excellent disciplinarian has a wide range of Information and can take any class in the schools except those in drawing and music V SAID HE WAS UNCHRISTIAN We also saw the mother of the boy who was refused leave of absence by I Mr Eaton In order that the boy might attend Evangelist Olivers meetings I The lady admitted that Eaton was an excellent teacher but claimed that he was unChristian However her charge waa a general one In refusing to grant this leave absence and subsequently sub-sequently other ones for the same purpose pur-pose Mr Eaton was sustained by the Board of Education V I I think the opposition to Eaton Is I an Oliver move that is J by Olivers I friends I have not heard that Oliver j I himself has taken any part in it Mr I Eaton worked at the bench pa a harI har-I nessmaker till he was of age and then I titled himself for teaching and I feel exonerating a man who has done so much for himself when he has been I wrongfully accused No one except the author of the letter presented by President Wilson to the Board of Education Edu-cation accuses Mr Eaton of Intemperance Intem-perance but the letter has been withdrawn and the name of its author has never been revealed SOMETIMES DRINKS BEER I understand that Mr Eaton frequently I fre-quently takes his meals at the Elite a place In Ogdon similar to Sig Simons place here and that occasionally he takes a glass of beer when he eats but that this is not a regular thing A prominent churchman In Ogden today said to me that he did not think this was the proper thing for a teacher but outside of this he had nothing but praise for Mr Eaton I took lunch at the Elite today and saw several Salt Lake business men there and the seat was pointed out to me In the Elite where Mr Critchlow who Is a member ot our board and Is opposing Eaton sits when he takes a meal In Ogden There are not the number of good restaurants in Ogden that there are in I Salt Lake and I know that If Mr Eaton comes here the custom 4wlll not be continued We were also told that Mr Eaton would be reelected as principal prin-cipal at Ogden today at an Increase of salary When asked about the future of the controversy Mr Bamberger said he could not make any predictions HOW THE BOARD STANDS As the board stands now four members mem-bers Bamberger Newman Young and Glaucjuo arc strong Eaton men while Wilson Crltchlow Walker Nelden and Henderson are against him with Moyle in doubt leaning however toward the Eaton faction Moyle holds the key to the situation 1C he goes with the antiEaton part it would make six t votes Just enough to c > ect some one else and if he goes to the Eaton side of the fence It would make a deadlock Jive to five The fact that Superintendent Cooper is i opposed to Eaton or at leant has Indicated his preference for C S Os I borne of Detroit lIlchJs strongest reason the antiEaton men urge for the position they lake They think It would be in the Interest of harmony = to engage a principal for tho high school who would be entirely satisfactory satisfac-tory to the Superintendent and they also believe that the Superintendents advice in the mailer should carry a great deal of weight SCHOOLS REOPEN SEPTEMBER The schools will reopen on September 10th and there is therefore not much time to be lost In making the selection Mr Walker Is In California and Mr Henderson Michigan and It Is likely that an election will be delayed until they return whlch Jt is thought will be in about ten days |
