Show AN ALLEGED TRAIN ROBBER l Arrest of Matt Berts in Rich County j by Arizona Officers On September 9th of last year the westbound Southern Pacific passenger train was held up by seven masked men near Chloch Ariz The express car was cut loose the safe blown open and 2GOO in money and a number of diamonds dia-monds were stolen On February 15th of this year five of the men Implicated in thc robbery were arersted near Tombstone Ariz and I are now In Tombstone Jail Their names are John Yost alias Juan Bravo I Bert Alvoid deputy sheriff and constable r con-stable of Tombstone W F Downing George Cohen and Louis Cohen One l of the men Matt Berts who had a hand In the robbery managed to get I out of the country and has been traced by ofilcers to many pai ts of the country until yesterday when he was arrested at Woodruff Rich county in this State II about eighteen miles from Evanston Wyo The olllccrs who made tile arrest ar-rest arc Bert Groves deputy sheriff of Yavapai county Ark William Stiles I deputy sheriff of Mojave county Ariz John Ward Sheriff of Evanston and I Detective J F Tender of the Ogden I police force Detective Tender and I Chief of Police Davenport have been searching for the man for about two I I months and with tho aid of Sheriff i I Ward they located Berts about ten days I ago on a ranch where he was herding I I cattle The Arizona officers were at I once notified and armed with a United States warrant they came to Ogden on Monday Tuesday night they with Detective Tender started to get their man leaving Ogden at S oclock Tuesday Tues-day evening Yesterday morning they drove from Evanston to the ranch accompanied ac-companied by Sheriff Ward where they made the arrest BorIs was placed I on the Union Pacific train last night I at Evanston accompanied by the Arl zona officers and Detective Tender arriving ar-riving at Ogden at 2 oclock this morning morn-ing The Arizona officers took their prisoner on through to San Francisco whence he will be taken to Tombstone Berts Is about 20 years old and is said to be a very dangerous criminal He and the five men previously arrested are said to have made up the gang that have been terrorizing tho railroads in Arizona for several years past They are said to be cattle rustlers horsethieves and allround bad men Bert was In Ogden for about a week in January before the Ogden officers knew he was wanted It was as clever a piece of detective work as has been done by Ogden officers I offi-cers for many years and reflects great credit upon Detective Tender and Chief Davenport and also upon Sheriff Ward The Arizona officers were much elated I over the capture One of the gang Is still at large and has not yet been located I lo-cated I |
