Show IiQr DAWN TIGHTER The VicePresidential Tangle Difficult to Unravel I OPPOSITION TO TOWNE Hany Delegates Want a Straightout I Democrat for Second Place and Object Ob-ject to Swallowing the Populist I Ticket and Platform Attention Turned to Elliott Danforth Showed that Mass of Delegates Do Not Want tho Minnesotan Croker Springs a Surprise Kansas City Mo July 30n the I evening before the national Democratic convention the VicePresidential nomination nomi-nation Is still unsettled It is the usual expression In a contest like this when there arc many candidates and no one has a majority to say that it is any bodys plum But it more appropriately I appropri-ately expresses the situation to say I that It is nobodys plum S The chief development of the clay was tho paralysis to a certain extent of several booms The morning opened With great confidence on the part of the frlonds of Mr Towne The foregone I conclusion that 16 to 1 was to be specifically I speci-fically mentioned In the platform and the disappointment of those who advocated I advo-cated a different course made it look for a time as If Bryan 16 tol I and Towne were lo be the three distinct features of the Kansas City convention The manner in which the Towne boom seemed to grow aroused those delegates who want a Straightout Democrat for second place and who abject to being accused of swallowing the Populist ticket and platform I TURN TO DANFORTH It was this feeling that turned attention atten-tion to Elliott Danforth of New York and for a time seemed that the East I and South combined l mltrht nnmo tho New Yorker And while the action u of the New York delegation In defeating Danforth and putting up Kellar seemed to make Danforths selection Improbable Improb-able the tide that set toward Danforlh during the day served to show that tho mass of delegates was not for Towne DISCIPLINE OF TAMMANY Another thing that New York has indicated pretty surely is that the State does not want a candidate I J can-didate at least the majority under the control of Croker for Kellar is not considered in a serious light at all In this same connection it may be said that hoSulzer candidacy also suffered somewhat t as Sulzer supported the nomination of Kellar a peculiar position posi-tion for an avowed candidate or course this act is an evidence of the discipline of Tammany hall but it also confirms the impression among outside delegates that Sulzcrs candidacy is not serious S BOOM FOR STEVENSON S I I Late in the evening after the action of tho New York delegation became known the announcement was made that Illinois was to Dlace Adlal E Stevenson in nomination and quite a little boom was started for him by some of the delegates Among those who talked earnestly for Stevenson was Henry D Clayton of Alabama who made the principal speech opposing Tone in the threeparty conference TIe said Stevenson had once been elected that lie was popular in Illinois was a man for whom the gold Democrats Demo-crats had once voted for and would probably vote for again It was also said that Massachusetts would vote for George Fred Williamson Williams-on the early ballot and that there was a prospect of a general favoriteson movement until the convention would vfleUle on some one acceptable to a majority ma-jority tyCROKER S CROKER SURPRISES EM Mr Croker told the threeparty conference con-ference that he had a candidate and that he would bring him out during the day It was soon known that he referred to Louis Nixon of New York who was at one time a constructor In the navy and is now largely Interested in shipbuilding It was supposed that Nixon would be presented during the meeting of the New York delegation and the Keller indorsement was a complete com-plete surprise It Is believed Keller is not meant to be pressed NOT ENCOURAGING TO TOWNE S The conference of representatives of < lhe Democrats Populists and Silver Republicans held in the middle of the lay while not advancing the prospects of any candidate was not encouraging to the friends of Towne who ell after it was over that they had a hard proposition to face MINNESOTAN WILL STICK Another feature of the day was a delegation canvass made by friends of Towne Tills was undertaken for the purpose of making a show of their strength The canvassers found supporters sup-porters in some of the delegations and obtained assurances of votes but not In any such number as to give them very much encouragement At the same time Towno intends tx remain In the field and his friends nay that us I each and every boom collapses It will demonstrated that he Is the logical candidate and the man who should be selected The days developments instead of making the situation clearer simply resulted in tangling it un more than I over before leaving the selection of the VicePresident not to the leaders and i managers but to the convention I |
