Show WATER SUPPLY IS lO 1fJ I Size of Streams is Rapidly Diminishing I I I I CONDITIONS ARE UNUSUAL I The Question as to the Supply for the Ivcmainder of the Summer Becoming Becom-ing a Serious One Suggestion thai Street Sprinkling May Have to be Stopped ITew Supply from Parleys Par-leys Turned In Viewt of Marcus E Jones on Conditions in Utah and Idaho t Hi The question of how the city Is to obtain sufllcient water during the next two or bhrcc months Is becoming avery a-very uerlous muller In ordinkry seasons sea-sons when the snowfall is normal the streams aieaL their highest during the month of June but this year owing to tho light snowfall there has practically been no highwater season ut all and at this early date the Streams the running run-ning as low or lower than they generally gener-ally do lute In July and in August Utah lake is I one foot below compromise compro-mise point two feet lorwcr than It usually is at this date Parleys creek and City creek are also7 running very low especially the latter which at times supplies scaicely enough willi the pipes and consequently Is almost devoid of pressure a very serious contingency con-tingency in case of a fire On June 9lh the flow in Parleys creek was 14S cubic feet per second and on June 20th it had fallen to 87 cubic feet per second The loss from evaporation this hot weather Is very great and If great heat continues the diminution will continue although probably not In so large proportion as tho supply now mostly comes from underground sources the surface water wa-ter having been largely exhausted The supply from City creek is HO scanty that the irrigation ditches In the Eighteenth Nineteenth and Twentieth Twen-tieth wards are completely dry it beIng be-Ing necessary to turn the whole How into the pipes From Parleys only snellfth of the flow is going into the IrrIgation ditches which Is all that can be spared for that purpose Yesterday the water acquired by the recent purchase of water rights by tho city in Parleys canyon was turned Into Parleys creek which will increase the flow for tho present by probably IOOOOOO gallons per day which will to some extent relieve the situation There Is a stream six Inches deep and right feet wide fed by springs In tho Iclnlty of the penitentiary which Is flowing into the Jordan at present t which It Is thought can be turned into he system without much work The demand for water is greater this year than ever before there being 575 more service pipes in use than last year which means that about 5000 more people are to be supplied Fiom present appcaranc it looks as if street sprinkling would have Lobe Lo-be discontinued very soon and unless copious rains relieve the situation here will be dead lawns and dusty streets besides the necessity of economical eco-nomical use of water for domestic purposes pur-poses |
