yesterday that the lessees of the Valco Mining companys property prop-erty above Park City have begun steps looking to the erection of a furnace that will enable them to put the ores of the property Into commercial form on the ground Mr Boyle who Ight rund Is at the head of the syndicate to which I at lease was awarded has been Inc I In-c wfth those conversant I I with the smelting of ores in this city wih smcltng and has decided that with the erection of a furnace the ores now opened up In the property can be made to afford D nice pro n To Install such a furnace would he Is assured entail but little expense nor would It be necessary to appeal to the < 5pen market for anything appeal coke The ores according to analysis afford their own fluxes and that the furnace will be resorted to is most likely The project Is similar to that with which the owners of the Dixie group started In early days and that has enabled them to get along without concessions from the custom plants of the valley At present the bullion from the property Is forwarded to the Chicago Copper refinery where it finds 0 good market and the lessees of the Valeo feel that a much can be accomplished by them At all events the experiment will not cost much I Departure of Prof Enunonk Deparre Eon His labors at Bingham well In hand Prof S F Emmons of the United States geological survey came In from that camp Saturday night and leaves today for Montana and British Columbia Colum-bia where matters require his attention atten-tion His labors at Bingham thus far have been of a most Interesting nature for while he wag prepared for a few surprises he did not expect tg find such an avalanche of testimony in support of reports he had listened to concerning the presence of copper These developments develop-ments In a camp that for many years had enjoyed the distinction oC being ono of the greatest lead producers In the land have imparted a feature to the undertaking that Is entirely new with those who studied Its geology and tho occurrence of ores there many years ago and with the large number awaiting the report the survey will f no doubt be put to the earliest possible possi-ble conclusion I Already many applications have been sent in to the Interior department at I Washington for any and all advance sheets that may be turned out on fling ham with requests from Boston New Good i Scene of Active Work I Correspondence Tribune 2 Chloride Aug 61n a recent visit to the southeast of Lincoln county Nevada more particularly Eldorado and vicinity I find there is quite a good deal of prospecting going on and o the different properties I visited among them the Wagner Bros who have Just erected a onestamp mill On their first run of ten tons they saved 130 This was taken from a vein twelve feet wide from which assays as-says from 5 to M10 in gold and 1 to 3 ounces silver They have one shaCC down forty feet another twentyfive feet with drifts started They have also six other claims which horns and will pay to mill Mr Powers property consisting of four claims there has been taken out with an arastra 10000 He has JUSt erected a onestamp mill and will be running ero you receive this Mr Power Is an oldtimer in the country and Is well known In Ploche and Nevada Ne-vada generally The McGregor property consists of four claims He lids shipped to the smelter and arustercd ore taken from this property to tho value of 25000 He is now oyaniding his tailings with good success The McDonell properly consists of two claims Il McDonell has been very fortunate as he was able to I i take out 2500 with a hand mortar Smith and Spanoagle who have lately come to camp have made several sev-eral locations Among them they have one claim they are working that assays as-says 209 gold silver 0 trace This Is only a small streak but the boys are making wages Mr Botedegce has got several good I locations From a shipment of two tons he received 2S3 silver predominating predomi-nating Mr M Connellys property consists con-sists of several I claims from one of them ho has shipped very regular The values consist principally of gold He has refused SIOOO for the group of mill was erected has been for repairs and improvements They have Just got through cyanldimj the tailings that had accumulated The cyanide plant I wits under the management of Mr Vanderood and a saving of 95 per cent gold and 75 per cent silver was made The ores are either shipped to Man I vllle a distance of forty miles or taken ta-ken to the river for treatment where water can be obtained They are arasterlng and treating the tailings In whisky barrels which by tho by is a very good use to put them to by the cyanide process I There Is a railroad surveyed within four miles of the center of this party operating quite extensively exten-sively and Is under the management of Mr Binder who has Just left for Los Angeles to make arrangements for a tenstamp mill There Is also 1 large property own d by Monagan Murphy The last shipment from this property averaged over 1000 in gold per ton There are also several other parties who own good properties here who lire either shipping or araster lng their ores There are several places on the river where power can be easily obtained at reasonable cost for mining purposes and when cheaper facilities ore put into practical use this camp will be the Deep Creek country occasional reference has been made to Dolly Varden district as belonging be-longing to the large number of mining districts within the radius deacrlpllvo I of the Deep Creel country as a whole I This letter will be devoted this dls trlct almost exclusively your correspondent corre-spondent having devoleil two weeks in Us investigation with results Tar superior su-perior to anything his past Imagination and frequent reports had led him to believe actually existed there Fine specimens of silver copper and lead I ores had often been brought Into Iba pith and placed upon oxhiDitlon indicating I indi-cating values obtainable there but by reason of the whole mining fraternity Interested in other lo I I being so largely j I I calllles only a passing consideration was awarded to the samples brought In I by this and thai discoverer Early last spring Mr Frank L SIzer I and MnJ Green Iho Jlrst named from Butte Mont and the latter from Denver I Den-ver Cob paid several of our districts I i a visit of Inspection which In a short I time resulted In Mr Sixer giving a J bond in the sum of 12000 on three claims owned by Ibapah parties a description de-scription of which will be given further on This fact awakened the dormant Interest of a number of our prospectors and from that date until the present now discoveries have been made almost I dally Clifton Ferber While Horse and Dolly Varden districts lay adjacent adja-cent to each other on almost an east I and west direction Dolly Varden being be-ing about thirtyfive miles In a northwesterly north-westerly direction from Ibapah its natural point for all kinds of camp I supplies hay grain etc The country rock of this district differs materially from that of Clifton and Ferber there being almost a total absence of the porphyrlllcgranllc predominating there Here dolomite and blue lime arc tho country rock Large dykes of quartzite are of frequent occurrence 1 also large Iron ledges capping the various vari-ous kinds of ore underneath These dykes and ledges as a rule are parallel with porphyry and shale The north side of the district abounds with eruptive erup-tive and volcanic rock THE MINERAL ZONE while not as extensive as Clifton Is well defined and lays In larger lodges and deposits Through tho central part of this mountain range lead and silver I ores of fine quallly seem to hold the center of the line and is flanked on the west with copper and cm the east with gold and copper Springs of line healthy water are located In various parts of the district within convenient distances from the mining camps Wood for charcoal camp and mining purposes dxlsts In great abundance At j I the eastern base of the range at a ranGe point known as the old Dolly Varden I smeller two large springe are located from one of which the walorilow Is sufficient for all smelting purposes The slream produced from this spring spring extends ex-tends and can be seen for at least two miles out Into the vale The old smelter alluded to was erected at this point some twenty years ago to handle the copper and olher ores from the Kinsley district and like many other wildcat schemes of lhat time It had a life of but u week or so by reason of mlsmanajreHfont and Incompetency when It was deserted leaving the machinery ma-chinery upon the ground as a monument monu-ment of folly Within the last sixty dos Mr SIzer has caused a steam hoist to be erected upon the Keystone lode and under tho proficient management of Mr John J Agoa who Is both superintendent and engineer the construction of the plant and the working of the mine have been most satisfactorily performed Assisted Assist-ed by John II Duffy as carpenter and miner and Messrs James B Ford Thomas Torney of Butte City and Samuel Sam-uel Cloutier and John Lambert all Clouter on al experienced ex-perienced mining men the work of sinking has been averaging from four to five feet per day Mr Charles Mitchell with his family run the boardinghouse and look after the transportation and camp supplies generally gen-erally erly I MINES WORKED The group of mines being worked consist of the Keystone Commonwealth Common-wealth and Grand Central tho property prop-erty of Samuel Cloullor S J Hendry and F Robinson of Ibapah The plant consists of a 30horsepowor engine an upright tubular holler a sleel rope hoist with wooden gallows frame nineteen nine-teen feet In height steel buckets of ono ton of ore capacity or 1500 pounds vein matter The size of the shaft Is four by five feel with a depth al the present wrlllng of 17G feet and within the next sixty days will reach the 300foot level On the 100foot level a crosscut running run-ning seventy feet east from the shaft has been completed also one of forty feet running north with a raise to the fortytoot level and a drift sixty feet In length from this point A new crosscut cross-cut on the 150foot level has been started and Is now In about ten feel and within the next four or five feet the ore body will be encountered On the surface and at the 100foot level tho ore body has 1 width of twenty feet principally of firstclass ore and all above medium grade At the 200 and 250foot levels drifts Into tho ore body will also be made at which lime the bond will be taken up and the money paid The Nevada lode adjacent to the abovenamed group owned by David Cable and Samuel Cloutier as a silver and lead property is the finest In qual ity and values yet unearthed In the district dis-trict Its promise for 1 future Is particularly par-ticularly bright On the west of tho Keystone group and Joining to each other are several claims und groups owned by S J Hendry Bud Weaver Oscar Iluftord C Clouller F Robinson Robin-son G A Henry C Mitchell R Cook J Skinner and others thc general characteristics char-acteristics of which arc so similar Hint the description already Riven answers for all Four miles farther west are some exceptionally good copper mines but being on patented ground very Illlle work has been done for years Jut Two miles east from the Key stone group several line gold copper and silver discoveries have been made this year The ledges are large and well defined Recent assays have shown as high as 21 SO In gold From the copper and silver ores no assays I have been made these discoveries be ing less lhan three weeks old Messrs Frank McCurdev David Cable and G A Henry are tho discoverers of tIme gold bell and hope lo ho able by tho time the snow flies to show larger and better results than their mere surface work now Indicates Their lhehlal e quartz and iron ledges exhibit every sign of permanency and future worth CLOUDBURST IN THE MOUNTAINS On Sunday o last week the forenoon was sultry and clos As the day wore on heavy clouds from Ihe went und southwest crawled slowly over the mountain tops and about noon all speculation spec-ulation as to whether II was going to rain or nol came to un enc < by firm an occasional drop ihcn 0 steady sprinkle and In a few minutes after the fall assumed the dignity of 0 genuine rain The men from the Keystone mine had Ilnlshed their dinner and the afternoon shift was about ready to be lowered down to the boltom of the shaft hut by reason of I necessary repair at the I I sioam hoist a delay of ton minutes Sl lime was required In the meantime the rainfall kept Increasing and Messrs Clou tier Dune r and Ford who had been walling to be lowered doWn the shaft hastened to the bunkhouse I to keep from gelling drenched before I the repairs to the hoist were completed I Hardly had they reached their place j I of shelter when a inuring sound from the mountain sides and gulches was heard from the south and west In 1 less lime than It lakes to make this record the divided raindrops assumed J the shape of countless little streams and from these Into SOLID SHEETS OF WATER accompanied by hal work at the hoist was abandoned and the workmen were forced to make a hasty retreat for shelter The roar from the cllrec ton indicated became louder and louder and while all eyes were directed I to the noise a bank of water several I feet high came leaping down the gulches and the whole surface of the mountain sides and levels was transformed trans-formed Into one solid and unbroken muss of maddened water The dry gulches of live minutes ago had become be-come rivers Great boulders weighing hundreds and even thousands of pounds leaped from their Imbedded places to Join time roaring foaming Infuriated column Trees that had withstood the storms for hundreds of years were torn from their roots lo become participants In the flood The wide valley ai the base and between lie Dolly Varden and White Horse ranges became a solid lake within an hour and like a panoramic view the I change from pandemonium to calm and quiet surrounding was as quickly assumed as-sumed as It had suddenly appeared The men left their shelter to resume work When reaching the hoist dismay dis-may and consternation was depicted upon the countenance of every man as one after the other came upon the scene at the shaft From an Incline located about forty feet away and near the main gulch an upraise had been made connecting this Incline with the main shaft at a depth of forty feet for the purpose of creating an air circulation cir-culation for the miners below The Immense volume of water from the gulch had overflown tho embankment at the Incline and as a result the current from the food shot Into It and had illled the shaft crdsscuts and up raises to the top of the fortyfoot level leaving not less than 130 feet of water rock and muck In the works below Here In less than ten minutes the flood had FILLED THE MINE which had taken years of time to excavate and hoist Undaunted by what seemed to be a complete ruin every man on the works Jumped Into the task before him Water troughs were made the Immense steel buckets were rendered ns near watertight as possible and before the day was over the engine was put In motion raising moton raising at the rate of one ton of water every two minutes and from thai time until the last vcslage of the disaster had disappeared not an hour was lost The saturated walls of the shaft and other parts of the mine had loosened many Ions of rock which dropped below and for a time promised lo make the ant unsafe for future use Since being cleaned oul the discover has been made that In point of actual safety r the mine Is now In better condition lhan anything except a Jood conditon I have rendered It With the exception excepton of the above very llltle other damage was done Hod the miners gone to their work as had been the Invariable custom before no power on earth could have saved the lives of either one of them for an Instant When the water broke through the fortyfoot level It went down to the bottom with a force and volume as large as the shaft itself carrying boulders of all sizes with It wrecking ladders and filling the bottom wllh not less than sixty feet of rock sand and muck Mr Mitchell with his family and hoardln foml boardinghouse ran a narrow escape from being washed away For a tlmo thc doors were at least l foot under water his trunks floated around at will and everybody got a thorough ducking tucklng your corre spondent not excepted G A H The Copper Stocks II was Just about two abut years ago says the News Bureau of Boston
