Show HEARSTS ADDRESS ISSJJES A 3TAJJIFESTO TO DEMO CBATIC CLUBS Declares this Year is No Ordinary One in Politics Arraigns Administration Adminis-tration for its Policy < Washington D C July 16W R irearst president of tho National Association As-sociation of Democratic clubs has Issued Is-sued the following address To the Democratic Clubs and Associations Asso-ciations of the United StatesThe time has come when all the Democratic societies In this country and all the patriotic bodies associated with them should publicly ratify the nomination of W J Bryan for President and Adlai E Stevenson for VIcePrcsldeni and to defend the Republic against the corrupting spirit of Imperialism This Is no ordinary year In Ameri 1J can politics Colonies have been established es-tablished under the American flag without the consent of the American people and In defiance 01 the Constitution Consti-tution The unlawful and brutal policy of President McKinley and his advisers Involving the abandonment of the principle of public equality on I American soil have been confirmed by I the convention Republican party In Us national conventon The Republican party under Its 1 present leadership If attempting attempt-ing to t commit a hitherto peaceful peace-ful and just nation to a care roC r-oC imperial adventure and conquest con-quest Its conservatism has disappeared dis-appeared and It maul policy Is dominated by a vulgar spirit of greed unknown on this continent until now The Republican party has become apart a-part of revolution I Is attacking the Irreproachable and timeapproved political Industrial and social systems under which this Republic has steadily steadi-ly I grown in strength and glory and has dishonored our flag arid our national I na-tional obligations before the civilized world I has made subjects of the inhabitants In-habitants of the Amqilcan territories and has denied to them the wise guarantees of constitutional government govern-ment It trampled the decision of independence In-dependence The Republican party Is a promoter and agent of the new and terrible trust system which seeks to destroy Industrial and comrnercial competition com-petition In Amerfcnanotfiqr revolutionary revolu-tionary movement hostile to free Institutions In-stitutions sttutons i I The humane and moral struggle for the emancipation of the neighboring Republic of Cuba was victoriously ended two years ago and yet our army occupies Cuban soil and the political favorites of the Republican pall plunder the helpless people of the island Isl-and A great army raised for the liberation of Cuba Is still maintained bloodshed for the purpose of extending trade by The spirit of militarism marks every act of the national Government These radical experimental conditions j I in the order of our national progress I threaten the existence of republican government on the American contl 1 ncnt Subjects and citizens cannot long endure under the same Hag Monopoly tag lronopol takes away opportunity and hopo from the masses of people It robs the young men of the nation of all chance to achieve their Independence and fastens upon them a perpetual wage servitude It converts small proprietors into hire lings and It puts Into tho hands of a few men the absolute control of production produc-tion and prices Against the new and dangerous pol icies condemned alike by experience and by justice the Democratic party is exerting Us whole strength Its can didates and Us political form represent the conservative sphlt of the American people and their faith In American institutions 1 ntitutlons They represent opportunity at home as against adventure In Asia peace rather than war inspired by the lust of money citizenship not subject hood n homogeneous republic not a lieterogonous empire a nation of prosperous pros-perous equal libertyloving citizens unburdened by war taxes or a great standing army leading ultimately to military conscription The reelection President McKln Icy will be taken by the Republican leaders as a proof that the American people approve of an Imperial military and trustbreeding policy Can any thoughtful citizen doubt what the ctzen consequences con-sequences of Republican Repub1can victory this fall will be The swift and unsuspected unsuspect-ed developments of the past four years point significantly to the purposes of President and his advisers in the near future In the presence of these impending national evils the National Association of Democratic Clubs calls upon all Democratic clubs organizations and societies In the United States to organize or-ganize their forces for the defense of republican Institutions Patriotic citizens citi-zens regardless of past political ties or prejudice arc earnestly asked to assist in this work of preservation This year the Nation must choose between the European and the American Ameri-can theory of government |
