Show DEATH OF AUTAH PIONEER l Stephen Kelsey Who Was in President Brigham Youngs Party that Landed in This Valley July 24 1847 J L S iltcfIW cct I Zf cviF I 441i4 tm S i1c 4m I i I I I I I I l I I VkVVl V I 11 V l NXVXVV l Stephen Kelsey one of the survlvqrs I of the I pioneers of Utah died nn Tuesday Tues-day at his home In Paris 13ear Lake I county Ida lie was nearly 70 years of age being born December 23 1830 I I in northeastern Ohio He was educated edu-cated In Ohio but removed to Nauvoo In IS 12 and to Winter Quarters In 1810 I In 1S17 when only 17 years of age he volunteered to accompany Brigham Young on the pioneer trip Mr Kelsey arrived In Salt Lake valley July 23 1847 and his first work was to help build a dam across City creek In order to turn the water over the land BO that It could be ploughed The work was accomplished and potalces were planted but it was then so late In the season that the tube a only grew to the gew size of marbles Ills next work was to assist in makinG adobes with which to build a fort to protect themselves from the Jndlans Shortly alter Mr Kelsey arrived In Salt Lake valley he was converted to the faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints and the same season sea-son he volunteered to return to the States with Brigham Young to assist other emigrants across the plains the following spring After his return to Utah he engaged In farming and In 1S50 mado a trip to the gold mining I districts of rallfcrnia I where he washed j out in two months with a li lie rocker I about 3500 in Sold dust This was at Veaverlnn On his way back to Salt I Lake City howcvrr the parry with which he traveled was attacked by Indian In-dian tnd for four hours they fought desperately for their lives They barely bare-ly I escaped and in the encounter lost many of their horses In the fall of 1S50 Mr Kolscy started with his uncle Daniel Allen twelve miles south of Salt Lalco City and there he married mar-ried Lydia Snyder who has ainco I been to him a faithful companion and helpmeet sharing with him In all the Joys and sorrows the adversity and plo peIJ of I fl She has been one of tIme bravo plnnorr women of Utah and Idaho ami has greatly aided her I husband In making 0 home i In 1 I1 n company was formed to go I to what is i now Boar Lake county Ida I IJUM m then supposed to be a part o Utah I Gen Charles Coulsen Rich was the president of the company Mr Kclauy I and his wife volunteered to go and others of the company were llcKeklah DufTln and Thomas Sleight both of Iwhom still live In Paris the county sent of Btcr Lake county They settled at Paris but most 0 the company of emigrants emi-grants alt now deceased They were allotted land and began farming but It was n very bard country to settle and they endured many hardships and met manv dimtultloH during time jrst few years Grasshoppers and frosts in jured their crops but through all throush al President Richs faith never faltered and ho encouraged his noble band of ploneero to peisevere In their labors until ultimately their labors were beau tifully rewarded and the country was made to blossom ns tho rose When Iho land was surveyed the settlers entered their farms from the Government Stephen Kelsey Is the father of twelve children eleven of whom are ol living namely Eleeta Abigal now the wife of Frederick Sleight LydIa wife of Samuel Payne Sylvia wife of John Skinner AlIce wife of Samuel Wate Mary wife of TCdwnrd Johnson Bess wife 1 of C Chapman Vlena Minerva 1lnelvo 6lnn Robert and Easton Mr I Kelsey was a high priest In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints and a faithful laborer amon the people In his ward ho received regular vllts from him In the capacity of a visiting priest I was his delight to relate incidents connected with his trip across the plains with Brlgham Young and at the Sundayschool Jubilee exercises last October took much satisfaction In ad dressing the children here upon that t Journey lie relates that when Presi dent Young was very sick and suffered greatly with loss of appetite that h went to time camp corral one evening and found there a prairie chicken He picked up a buffalo chip and killed It then toolc It to his wagon cleaned It and fixed It up in a palatable manner for Brigham who ate It with relish It being the only meal he hind enjoyed for several days Mr Kelsey looked 1 upon this as l peculiar Incident as this chlcKfn was tie only one seen at the camping place The funeral will bo today I Thursday at the stake tabernacle Paris Ida |
