Show MONUMENT CEREril0NIY Continued from page 5 all our efforts had failed and every thing would be devoured you can pic ture to yourselves what the prospects were at that time what would come if nil failed because there were not provisions pro-visions enough to carry scarcely any of the people to California or to the East But when the prospects seemed the darkest and it seemed as though everything would be devoured the gulls came In clouds and ate up the crickets We used to go to the old Fort to worship on Sunday and when we returned to our fields on Monday morning we saw where the gulls had been devouring the crickets and the people were filled with hope THE SIGHT OF GOLD These were tho circumstances connected con-nected with the settling of the valley President Young had gone back He never endowed a man more abundantly abundant-ly with the elements that were necessary neces-sary to success than he did Brigham Young and the day will come In future times when he will be held up as the greatest living American of his time Now I do not say that this Is too much I believe It and I am warranted war-ranted In the belief by the judgment of others who knew him as well as I did didBRIGHAMS BRIGHAMS ACHIEVEMENT I remember once having a conversation conversa-tion with Jeremiah Black ono of the foremost men of the Nation He said to me when Iwas visiting him nt his home Mr Cannon I look upon Brig ham Young as the greatest living American in view of all ho has accomplished ac-complished Of couiae he would not be called a great man In some directions direc-tions but in the work that he did it was Inspired it was unequaled History His-tory gives us no account of any such achievement as he wrought out Think of It1lhlnk of the courage It required re-quired to launch out Into a wilderness wilder-ness of which he knew nothing and of which but little wns known with thousands of people following him and he equal to the responsibility of lend ing them without doubt returned in 18 accompanied by Brothers Klmball and Richards and i others having a company behind them and shortly after their return news came Trom California that vgbld had been discovered Men who belonged to the Mormon battalion had helped find it and they came in with their little bags of gold dust You can im agino what the effectof such a sight would be on people In the condition that the Saints were at that time Of course the thought of traveling a few hundred miles and getting gold in abundance was exceedingly attractive attrac-tive thought to the people If they had been Jeft to themselves and acted from selfish motives or a feeling to look after their worldly Interests alone they would no doubt have gone quickly quick-ly l to the gold lleldB Some did oho o-ho did npt have patience did not have faith to stop and try the experiment experi-ment of living here They wanted to got whore there was gold that could be obtained easily by digging and many of them went It wad thon that Brigham Young In my opinion and as I look back on It now displayed the wonderful statesmanship states-manship of which ho was possessed lie stood In the midst of tho people and reasoned with them ho remonstrated with thorn he appealed to them in every way possible to stay here and not to desert this land barren though it was discouraging though the prospects pros-pects were distressing the outlook He said to them Stop here and cultivate the ground Dont go to California dont go after gold and I will promise I you that you who stay here and attend to your business cultivate tho ground I innVo vnurMolves homes that you will I iQi richer l in a few years than the men I who go for gold and fchey will coma back and be willing to pay you for your improvements Now that prediction was fully verified veri-fied Of those who did go away many returned and in many instances returned re-turned very poor while the men who stayed hero had built themselves homes and were living with somo degree of comfort HIS OPPOSITION TO MINING Now Brigham Young has been charged by those unfriendly to him a3 having opposed mining in this country as being unfriendly and inimical to mens pursuing mining and various charges have been circulated concerning concern-ing his motives In having these feelings feel-ings He has been accused of not being willing to develop the mineral Inter estn of this country and that he did It purposely to keep out hon rormon influences Well I want to say right here that unless Brigham Young had been filled with the spirit and determination determi-nation to do all In his power to direct the peoples attention to the development develop-ment of the resources at home this country would not have been what it IB today Many of our people thought they would get rich by going In pursuit pur-suit of gold and silver He said to every one whom he could reach Attend At-tend to your farms develop the ground raise the grain raise the potatoes and other vegetables and make yourselves homes here and not go running through the mountains andover and-over the plains searching for gold and silver The time will como when we can do that and do It Ip safety but now we arc not secure until we have enough to cat and that question is no longer a question and we have plenty I ADVANTAGES OF FARMING And we havo lived to witness the changes that have occurred and no man In my opinion will say that we would have received the same advantages advan-tages by mining as by the agriculture and manufacturing that have built up the great people that now live In these valleys A great work has been done We who believe In God and In Mormonism give God the glory but wo cannot withhold the meed of praise that Its 1 due to Brigham Young whom we believe to have been inspired lIe was the man in the hands of God to lead lie way and of doing and accomplishing ac-complishing this great work aud God from the leading out of the children I of Israel by Moses but that was a p small matter In many respects compared com-pared wUh this that has beo done I and there is room for the wrIting of the greatest enlc that was ever written J I i to describe what has been achieved Incoming J In-coming here under the leadership of J the masterly statesmanship and Iore slgfajr o Brigham young I APPROPRIATENESS OF STATUE I therefore am glad to see this monument monu-ment elected to his memory lam glad to see that It Is finished today and that we have in our midst tiE gentleman who has clone the work air Dallln and that he nov has all the figures completed I do not believe much in statues and think that noble deeds should live in the memories of the people rather than In stone and bronze But this la all right and our I children ought to ba taught continually continu-ally the story of the emigration to ands and-s of this country There Is one thought that I would like to express before I sit down and that Is that the settlement of this country would not have been accomplished accom-plished at the time It Was accomplished If it had not been for religious Influences Influ-ences When the people were told that this was the place that God had designed de-signed for their settlement they clung to 11 with tenacity and when the tomiHation of gold mining In other places came and appeals were made to them not to desert Zion the place that God had designated every feeling opposed to that vanished and the love of God the love of their religion caused them to staN sta-N w my friends I thank you for your kind attention I pray that God may bless you all and that he
