Show Coal Mining Draws Spotlight at AMC Gathering All aspects of coal mining, preparation pre-paration and transportation will get a thorough airing by more than 2000 leaders of the nation's coal industry at the 1962 Coal Convention of the American Mining Congress May 7-9 at Pittsburgh, Pa., according to the nal program just released by Julian Conover, AMC executive vice-president. Senator Gordon Allott of Colorado, Colo-rado, a high-ranking member of the U.S. Senate committee currently cur-rently making a national fuels policy study, will be guest speaker speak-er at the Welcoming Luncheon Monday, May 9. AMC President Herbert C. Jackson, executive vice-president, Pickands Mather & Co., will preside. Major Jaseph Barr will welcome wel-come the convention to Pittsburgh, Pitts-burgh, and industry responses will be made by AMC Coal Division Di-vision Chairman Jesse F. Core, vice-president, operations-coal, U.S. Steel Corp.; Program Committee Com-mittee Chairman L. H. Chalfant, manager, Bethlehem Mines Corp., and Manufacturers Division Divi-sion Chairman Austin Goodyear, president, Hewitt-Robins Inc. A discussion of "New Horizons Hori-zons for Coal" will highlight the opening session Monday, morning. morn-ing. Coal's future market picture will be presented by Marling J. Ankeny, director, U.S. Bureau of Mines. R. M. Hutcheson, vice- president, Virginia Electric and Power Co., will speak on high voltage transmission of electricity. electri-city. Stuart T. Saunders, .president, .presi-dent, Norfolk & Western Railway Rail-way Co., will outline the many progressive steps being taken by the railroads to aid coal's competitive position. The transportation trans-portation of coal by pipeline, now so much in the limelight, will be discussed by Eric H. Reichl, director, Research and Development Division, Consolidation Consoli-dation Coal Co. Modern production methods which have kept coal costs competitive com-petitive with other domestic fuels will be discussed by top industry and government experts in technical sessions during the three-day meeting. Every phase of the industry will be covered underground and strip mining, preparation, safety, maintenance, management tools and techniques, tech-niques, and taxes. Another feature of the convention con-vention will be a special luncheon Tuesday. Mel Allen, long-time radio and television voice of the New York Yankees and a nationally known sports personality, will speak on the "World of Sports." Scheduled for Thursday, May 10, is an all-day visit to the U.S. Bureau of Mines' outstanding outstand-ing experimental mine and research re-search facilities at nearby Bruce-ton. Bruce-ton. Other special events are a reception re-ception Sunday, May 6, the Coal Miners Party Monday evening, the annual "Speechless" Banquet Wednesday evening, and for the ladies, a luncheon-style show and river cruise. |
