The Kennedy Administration has given the country strength and stance to cope with the perilous peril-ous time through which it is passing. 1 This was the message of Sen. Lee Metcalf, Democrat of Montana, Mon-tana, brought to a large crowd of Democrats attending the party's par-ty's annual Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner at the Terrace last Saturday. 1 Among the actions which brought about the present better condition the Senator named the following: The smashing of the legislative logjam in the House Rules Committee; Com-mittee; the increase in minimum wage, passage of an area development devel-opment act and Manpower Retraining Re-training Act to meet problems created by automation, aid to Latin America through the Alliance Alli-ance for Progress, a major boost in defense spending. Sen. Metcalf called the Alliance Alli-ance for Progress the "most sweeping change in foreign policy since Franklin D. Roosevelt Roose-velt proclaimed the Good Neighbor Neigh-bor Policy." He cited tariff history to document docu-ment his view that decisions cannot can-not be forged in languid debate in a time "when bombers are on 15-minute alert." Other speakers included Sen. Oren E. Long, Democrat of SENATOR LEE METCALF Hawaii. Weber County Young Democrats, Demo-crats, headed by Stewart Campbell, Camp-bell, won the "Outstanding Young Democrat Club of the Year" award. Darrell Rentstrom, Weber County attorney and national committeeman for Weber YD Club, was presented with the "Outstanding Young Democrat of the State Award." Some 1000 persons attended the $12.50 a plate affair. |
