Show Page Twelve FRIDAY, )ULY 14, 1961 THE SALT LAKE TIMES Agnes Zollinger, Wm. Bruhn To Head Demo Support Plan ;; y f ' l vJiot ft Wm Mrs. Agnes Zollinger and William "Bill" Bruhn discuss plans for launching President Kennedy's "Operation Support" in Utah. Mrs. Agnes Zollinger and Wil-liam Bruhn have been appointed state chairman and an of President Kennedy's "Opera-tion Support" in Utah by the State Democratic executive com-mittee. Mrs. Zollinger is active in state and Cache County Democratic circles, being a member of the State Democratic Central Com-mittee, Cache County executive committee and Logan City The resigned as presi-dent of the Cache County Demo-cratic Womens Club to accept the state chairman of "Operation Support."' William "Bill" Bruhn of Pan-guitc- h is well known as an out- - standing Democrat, having run for Congressman, First District, in the last Democratic primary. He was mayor of Panguitch, president of the Utah Municipal League, member of the Water Resources Board, and chairman of the Garfield County Commis-sion. The purpose of "Operation Support," which is sponsored by the National Democratic Com-mittee, is to obtain support for the President's legislative re-quests by making available to all Utah clubs and organizations both partisan and non-partisa- n, information as to why the Presi-dent strongly feels the need of the proposed legislation. Later the organization is to be respon-sible for gaining support for the Congressmen who supported the President. Rep. King Addresses Scouts in San Diego "The American people cannot defeat the menace of communist subversion by legislative action i any more than they can legislate away disease," Rep. David S. King said at a meeting in San Diego, Calif., of 1500 Explorer Scouts. The Congressman led discus-sions on citizenship and govern-ment which highlighted the ses-sions of the Region 12 Explorer delegate conference. The 1500 Explorers gathered aboard the aircraft carrier Ben-nington, moored at the San Diego Naval Station, included more than 300 Explorers from Utah. "Spiritual drive, strict self-disciplin- e, hard work and sacri-fice and not legislative action will give the American people, individually and collectively, the vigor and strength they need to eventually conquer communist tyranny. "The nation needs the alert and expertly trained Federal Bu-reau of Investigation, which it of course already has, to keep a constant check on subversive ac-tivity. "It should also have a Freedom Academy or another similarly-conceive- d agency, expressly de-signed to counter the economic and political warfare which the communists are waging on every continent," he said. , "However, if we attempted by police action to rid the nation of every communist and communist sympathizer, these enforcement measures required to obtain the objective might destroy many of the liberties and much of the precious democratic process we are so determined to preserve, and to eventually share with all nations. "If we resort to these measures we would risk turning our de-mocracy into a fascist state which would resemble the movement we are so devoutly committed to defeating. "Just as the physical body's best weapon in fighting disease is its natural vigor and resistance the body politic must recognize that it similarly best fights the disease of subversion through its own natural vigor and strength. That vigor and strength can be founded only upon a strong de-votion to democracy, supported by the spiritual drive, the initia-tive and the sacrifice which will enable us to outwork and out- - thlnk our communist enemies." the congressman said. were set for two three-da- y week ends, Aug. 19-2- 1 and 27-2- 8.
