Show S.L County Level Activity Holds Political Spotlight County level activity held the political spotlight in Salt Lake County this week with two Democrats Dem-ocrats announcing their candidacy candi-dacy for county posts. On the state and national level the political status quo was maintained main-tained with no new candidates coming forth. Salt Lake County Attorney Frank E. Moss remained the only candidate for the'U. S. Senate nomination and David Welling of Ogden the only Democratic candidate can-didate thus far for the U. S. Representative in Congress from the First District. No candidates have announced from the Second District. With the State Democratic convention less than a month away it is expected that anyone hoping to line up a nomination will be making his intentions known within the next few days. Still considered as likely candidates can-didates for the senate nomination nomina-tion are retiring state Democratic chairman Milton L. Weilenmann; former Governor Herbert Maw, and former State Senator Warwick War-wick C. Lamoreaux. The three Republican incum- (Continued on Page 8) S.L. Dawson have not made known their intentions but there is little doubt that all three will seek reelection. All three have been in Utah in the last week and their formal announcements are expected to be forthcoming, possibly this weekend. Political observers point out that Rep. Dawson might still be considering making a run for fellow Republican Watkins' seat and therefore might wait until the last minute to play his cards. However, Mr. Dawson has said that he was not interested in running for the Senate. Former Governor J. Bracken Lee, who has a political score to settle with Senator Watkins, has likewise been playing it close to the vest. It appears that all the Republicans Repub-licans are holding off waiting to see what the other is going to do. The indecision of the GOP incumbents in-cumbents apparently is having some effect on possible Democratic Demo-cratic hopefuls. Although a number num-ber of likely candidates for the two Congressional posts has been mentioned none has shown obvious ob-vious signs of running. On the county level veteran; Salt Lake County Assessor Alvin Keddington this week announced his intention to seek reelection and former Salt Lake County Democratic Chairman S. C. (Cliff) Cockayne announced for the county assessor nomination. The 100 members of the U. S. Army Field Band must not only be first class musicians but also combat infantrymen. |
