Show PROFIT AND LOSS ON GARBAGE. The removal of garbage from large cities is becoming a problem of great interest to the health and comfort of the people. Here in Salt Ldke almost every inquisition of the grand jury wrestles with the unsavory and expensive question. Indictments are multiplied, multi-plied, smelling committees and pugnacious lawyers are in demand. We believe our common council have appropriated some thousands of dollars to purchase crematories cremator-ies in which to consume the unwelcome but ever present stuff. The Chicago Herald says: "So useless a thing as garbage need not be wasted; in fact it may be made a source of profit. At Providence, Khode Island, a firm contracts to collect and dispose of all the city's garbage gar-bage at 15 centa per annum for each "of the population. It is delivered to the Kiver-side Kiver-side Chemical works, among whose stockholders stock-holders are the contractors. The chemical works pay nothing for the garbage and receive re-ceive nothing for disposing of it. Their profit comes from the substances extracted and sold. The city gains in the low price paid for the removal." It would be well for our city fathers to inquire into this matter if the city is not already committed to the cremation business. busi-ness. An ounce of saving prevention is worth a pound of expensive cure, which is not a cure. |
