Show ISILVER BILL KILLED AN ATTEMPT TO FORCE IT THROUGH THE HOUSE FAILS. ; And Now the Paid Politician will Shout Himself Hoarse for "Tariff Re- . . . form" and "Reciprocity. " Washington, July 13. The senate on assembling took up the sundry civil appropriation appro-priation bill, pending Quay's motion for the adoption of the amendment closing the World's fair Sundays. The motion to lay on the table was defeated 11 to 45. HOUSE. The attendance in the house was large this morning. The anti-silver democrats were full of .confidence and soup, and the republicans alert. The silver men were determined, but everybo'dy had little happiness. Their programme was suddenly charged this morning. They resolved to force the fighting and make the fightecisive. So they resolved to adopt the unusual . course of voting against the previous pre-vious question and the adoption of the special spe-cial rule allowing the bill to be called up. If defeated it would be regarded as a test vote. If they succeeded in defeating the previous question the plan wouia De to oner an amendment to the rule permitting an amendment of the bill, to cure the objections made in the caucuses. - - " On the roll call the vote stood 163 to 129 in favor of ordering the previous --qtfestt on," and the cleric then proceeded with the call of absentees. The previous question having been ordered action came on the adoption of the rule. This was defeated, 136 yeas, 154 nays. This ends all possible silver coinage coin-age legislation -at this session, and Stewart' free silver bill will repose at the foot of the long list ef dead bills on the house calendar. |
