A Record of Disaster That is Appalling The Story of tho Calamities. San Francisco,' July 12. Explosions occurred oc-curred at the Giant & Judson Powder works, near AVest Berkley this morning, destroying those works and much property for miles around. Five 6hocks were felt in this city within a few minutes, the last four being of terrific force, shaking buildings, cracking walls and breaking plate glass in buildings eight blocks up from the water front It is known that a number of lives were lost at West Berkley, but particulars are unobtainable. unobtain-able. Relief parties have gone to the scene from Oakland. WestBtrkley is twelve miles from this city. The giant powder works were completely destroyed, and of the one hundred and eighty men employed there it is thought nearly all are killed. Among the white men known to be killed are WALLACE DICKINSON, CHAS. CAMBURDY,. JOHN BOW, The body of a Chinaman was found on the railroad track a half mile from the works. The remains of a boy were found frightfully fright-fully mangled near the scene. Every window win-dow in the county jail at Oakland is broken by the explosion. All the windows in the residences in the town of West Berkely were broken and several buildings are reported destroyed. At 1:15 p. m. it was believed that 104 were killed, including three white men. Nearly all the men employed in the works were Chinese. The explosion set the adjoining buildings afire, and, owing to the dauger of additional explosions, no one ventured near the works to stop the progress of the flames. The fire was in cjose proximity to the magazine containing 300 tons of powder, and fears are expressed that it, too, may be destroyed. |
