Show 1 w THADDEUS STEVENS' WILL. An Alleged Wife of His Nephew Contesting Contest-ing for $KOOO She Claims Belongs to Her. Chambeksbi kg, April 12. The will of the late Hon. Thaddcus Stevens has again been brought into promineuce by Mrs. Mary Clason, of Lebanon. Mr. Stevens was the owner of a large estate iu this county upon which was located the Caledonia Iron works. One of his nephews, Alanson Stevens, assisted as-sisted in the management of these works. While on the estate he Jived with Mary Prim, ostensibly as man and wife. When the war br ke out he entered the service, and was killed. Thaddeus Stevens was guardian of Alanson. Recently papers have, been found among the effects of Thaddeus Thad-deus showing him to be indebted to Alansou about $6000. Mrs. Clason now claims that when she resided at Caledonia, she was the wife of Alanson, having been married in 180S at Harrisburg, and she is prosecuting for the amount due Alanson. The testimony is being taken by William Leaman of Lancaster, one of the auditors or the estate. About fifty witnesses, residents of Caledonia, were present, to testify that Alanson never recognized Mary Prim as his wife. Should she succeed in establishing her case, the estate will be reduced below $50,-000 $50,-000 and thus make void the bequest of that amount for the establishing of a home for friendless children at Lancaster. |
