Show 2 THE SALT LAKE TlIflKS: MONDAY, Ai'KIL 25, 1892 sociation. Mr. Lkicds decliues to talk about the matter at all. "It is true that the projectors and principal promoters of the competing road proposition see that the Cleveland road through Nevada will assist materi-ally in the work planned to be under-taken. The Nevada legislature gave the counties of Nevada authority to bond themselves at the rate of $3000 per mile to assist in the construction of the road for which Mr. Cleveland has the right of way. This fact added to the fact that a competing road is projected, sums up about ail the reliable informa-tion in the premises that has been here-tofore published." THi: MKW UAILKOAD. The talk of a new line from Salt Lake City to San Francisco, which has re-cently been revived on tbe coast with promise of substantial financial back-ing, has aroused considerable interest in local railroad and business circles. The San Francisco Bulletin has the fol-lowing on the subject which will be of interest to this section: "Some facts have been made public during the last two days concerning a movement of California capitalists look-ing to the construction of a competing railroad to run from this city to Sail Lake. Many misstatements have also been made, ft is a fact that such a mpvement is on foot antl that men are ba(ck of it in sufficient force to lend it dignity and to furnish a strong basis for the hope that a new railroad will be constructed. Certain lists of citi.ees have been printed as being the men iu the work. These lists have been partly incorrect, and none of them are com-plete. It was not desired by the pro-jectors of the enterprise that auy mention should Le matle of it at time. Certain sums of money have been paid in, but the facts have been incorrectly given concern ing these. No one known to be on the inside wiil authorize the printing of i any definite statement. A recent census bulletin furnishes an interesting summary of the wool manu-facture of the United States. The num-ber of establishments reported for 1890 as engaged in the manufacture of "woolen goods"' proper, when com-pared with the number in 1880, shows a decrease of 608. The number reported in 1880 for this branch of the industry showed "a decrease of 'J01 establishments from the number re-ported in 1870. This continued decrease is seeming rather than real, and is ex-plained by the disappearance of the custom or neighborhood carding mills, which formerly carded wool to be spun in families. The number of fully-equippe- d woolen and worsted mills has considerably increased since 1880, as well as their aggregate machinery ca-pacity. A most signiticant fact is "that a great reduction has taken place iu the market value of the products of the wool industry." It is the quantity, rather than the value of the product, that truly measures the progress of the industry-- . The whole number of establishments reported is 2503. The capital invested is 8296, 1183, 104, an increase cf $157,091,-80- 9 as. compared with-- liiSik During the decade the hands emplcved in-creased 36.84 per cenfc the wages paid 62 per cent, and the value at the fac-tory of the goods 20. 50 per cent. The great seats of the industry as iu the New England states, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. Thus Con-necticut has $25,000,000 capital invested; Maine, $9,700,000, Massachusetts, $75,-000,00- 0; New Hampshire, $15,000,000; New Jersey, $8,000,000; New York. $49,-000,00- Pennsylvania; $68,000,000; and Rhode Island, $28,000,000. Every state has more or less capital invested in this industry, and the total average number of hands employed for the whole coun-try is 221,087. The total amount paid in wages annually is $76,768,871. The value of the product in 1890 was $338,-231,10- The introduction ox the modern card has enormously increased the capacity for production and rendered quite un-satisfactory any calculations of compar-ative capacity based on the number of sets of cards. A further evidence of the increased capacity of our wool ma-chinery appears in the increase of combing machines, which marks the tendency from woolen goods to worsted goods. The statistics are conclusive of the fact that the industry as a whole is making steady progress under the pro-tective system, and that woolen pro- - ducts were never cheaper or better than u'y are today. Those who engage in (w' sill' talk of figuring out the per-centages of duty on woolen clothing should remember that there is no tariff on home made goods.
