The entertainment given by the deaf mutes of the Descret University last evening was a unique and interesting exhibition that was well attended. Prof. Metcalf, the principal, in a brief introductory address ulcomed Hie audience and announced that lie exhibition was for the purpose of illus. rating the progress of the institution. The roiiramnie was as follows: Addresses of Welcome, Libbie DeLong of Garfield county 14 years old, member of the lip reading class. First step in teaching the deaf. A class of beginners, consisting of ltiith Carter of Utah county, Ada Davis of Beaver county, l.illie Swift of Salt Lake, Pearl Ault of Utah county, Lyman Probert of Provo, Klgin Jacobson of Davis county. Second step A class of more advanced pupils: Mamie Young of Kane county, Elmo Kemp of Salt Lake county, Joe Keeley and Ole Petit of this city, Samuel Porter of Sevier county, Miss Stifllcr being instructor of both classes. Natural signs, representing fruits, by Lizzie Wood of this city; and representiug animals by Hathron Hadlock of Ogden. First steps in teaching deaf children to articulate and read lips: Amy Divine of Morgan, Joe Cameron of Garfield county, John Almy of Esealante, Elmo Kemp, J.illie Swift, Mamie Voung, Pearl Ault. The teacher, Miss Grace Zorbaugli, began with the word "hair" to show how the children are taught to speak a new word. Then followed fol-lowed a short drill in articulating and Hp reading. More advanced work in articulation articula-tion and lip reading: Amelia Comer of Lehi, Leo Hawkins and Aksol Amundsen of this city, John Clark of Gartieid county and Libbie DeLong. Conversation carried on orally anu by reading read-ing the lips, between Libbie tie Long and Aksel Amunaden. Story taken from Miss Zorbaugh's lips and reproduced bv Amelia Comer and Libbie Dc Long. Recitation spoken by John Clark. Recitation of twenty-third psalm in signs by a class of little folks. Advanced language exercises by F'.arl Moore, of Emery county, Amelia Comer, Libbie Do Long and John Clark, conducted by Mr. Driggs. Humorous recitation, "Courtship Under Difficulties," in pantomime, by Joe Oloreu-Bhaw Oloreu-Bhaw of this city. Mechanical drawing by Earl Moore, Andrew An-drew Madsen, Leo Hawkins and Nephi Larson. Lar-son. Song, "Rock a Bye, Baby, in the Tree Top," in signs by the school choir, consisting consist-ing of four young gentlemen and four young ladies. The programme was closed with a child's prayer, in signs, by l.illie Swift. Speeches were made by Hon. W. H. King, Speaker Seegmillcr, Hon. J. I). Irvine ami others.
