Superintendent of sewers Sheltou repre-sented that the department was in immedi-ate need of 500 feet of lire hose for the pur-pose of lltishitig the sewers, which were gradually closing Bp because they had not been properly flushed for some time, when hose had to be borrowed from the lire de-partment. The department also needs a circuit breaker. He also asked that the salary of the assistant engineer of the pump be raised from $00 to $75 a mouth. The manholes of the sewers were in many easts away off the grade of the streets, and this was a defect that should be at once reme-died, as the sewers were being Hooded by surface waters. Referred. "Referred. The reeommandation of the health com-mittee concerning a stand for express wagons was referred. The city engineer called the attended of the council to the manner iu which the pavement at the intersection of .State and First South streets was being re-paired. A good foundation was essential part of a substantial pavement. At the place refefred to there was practically no at all other than that which ordinarily forms the surface of the streets of the city. He-di-not know to what extent the power of the could be make manifest in the matter, but he did not know that failure would be sure to follow the haphazard and careless method employed, aud he therefore sug-gested that the matter be called to the atten-tion of the board of public works and that the work he done under its supervision. The opening of Green street aud the changing of its name to West Capital was ordered. The engineer reported that the Union Pacific had been ordered to move its track on South West Temple street and that the city marshal had been instructed to so notify the company. Au estimate of the cost of paving West Temple street was submitted at $i,:5() of which amount the city's proportion would be $280.40. The city recorder was instruc-ted to advertise notieeof intention. The recommendation of City Treasurer Duke that I. N. The city attorney, who had been requested to draw up an ordinance fixing the salaries of the various city officers, also reported that be had examined the law on the matter, and had found that an ordinance was passed in April, ISdO, by the city council, fixing the salaries, fees and compensation of the differ-ent officers of the city.
