The Tim i s has heretofore expressed itself aa being in favor of consolidating elections in the territory and especially in advocacy of iixing November as the time for choice of territorial and coun-ty ollieials. It believes, however, that lu the election of city officials in cities of the first and second class, the time now provided for them is uitu appro-priate and should not be changed, for it does not believe, it advisable to mix national issues with those of a strictly municipal character. The legislature is not supposed to be enacting laws merely for tomorrow or next month; it should feel impressed with the fact that the territory is grow-ing rapidly and that conditions are changing right along. We repeat that we believe the public interest would be well subserved by making no change in tho time of hold-ing municipal elections in the cities of the classes hereinbefore referred to, and that school elections should not be held near a period whi n exciting inter-est in national affairs is prevalent. We are glad to noto, however, that there is a manifest disposition to consolidate the August and November elections in the last named month, and we hope to note the passage of an act by the legis-lature to that etfeet. Zanf.svili.k, Ohio, ministers hare declared affainst Sunday funerals. This Is a blow at the secret societies. The civilized world lost one. of its noblest men in the death of Cardinal Manning, lie? was beloved by both Catholic and Protestant alike. A BILL was introduced in the house yesterday "for tho protection and en-couragement of bee culture." This would indicate that our legislators want honey. Tin-- Iowa ! is now ready for business. Will It repeal the prohi-bition law? Tho chief interest of the session centers in the action on this l ucsliou. Tiik east is threatened with floods; the south has been visited by a week of steady rain, the northwest is frozen up; only I'tah enjoys the blessing of a gen-In- e climate. All England U in mourning over the tloccasft of Albert Victor, eldest son of the Prince of Wales, who was, aitt-- the prince, the direct heir to the British thrunc. That heir now is Trinee GEOBGB, born in 1805, who is consid-ered tho superior of his brother in in-tellect and iu chftroter Uneaslneu is felt in KngJand lest the fatality of death should remove the Prince and leave the succession to his eldest sister, wife of the duke of Fife, for the duke is not of l he blood royal, and the members of England's aristocracy are great stick-lers in the matter of keeping the blood of their reigning sovereigns unmixed with aught so nearly plebian as that possessed by a Scottish nobleman. It is lamentable that the human fam-ily is so largely addicted to Hundreds of more worthy young men than was the Duke of Clarence and A ondale die every day, and such events pass with trivial notice or with none at all. lint the duke was in tho line of succession to a throne, a mem-ber of a royal line that boasts of its be-ginning with William the Conqueror; Vfioae .sovereigns have always claimed lo rule by Divine right, and have been sustained in that absurd claim by the people of one of the greatest nations of the world. is, however, one of the many failings to which humanity is heir and the people of a nation must expe-rience a new birth before it can be erad-icated from among them. That "death loves a shining mark" was never better illustrated than The prince royal of the house of Great Hreat Britain and two princes of the holy church of Home answered to the summons of the grim destroyer. The senate committee on territories has decided upon February 11 as (lie date when it will hear arguments on the ( 'a iNK'I' Ai i.itNKii bill. Tim esteemed Ogden standard now asserts that il never said anything that could be construed into a claim of any kind on the homo rule bill. The Mawl-ar-must have received its orders from the "home ollice." It wiggles pain-fully but submits, and now declares that tho home rule bill is an democratic measure. It, however, still lovea the bill and abuses The Timks in the same sweet manner because, forc- - sooth, Tin: Times doesn't like the pro-posed measure. Till he is a little eheet ruldi.sln d in Park City tlutt presumes, in tin- mime of the liberal party, lo welcome The Times to the liberal ranks. We like this. Thanks, Mr. Mia, r. Tut; Times will undoubtedly profit by the advice 6o freely given. It knows the exact value of such a welcome, not being al-together without experience in that direction. Salt Lake Citv owes much to the push and energy of Mr. Fhed Simon, and in his retirement from the presi-dency of the ehamberof commerce that body loses the man who has, more than any other man, been the making of it. It has been a hobby of his, and to his efforts a large part of its efliciency must be credited. His report, which will be found in Tun Timks today, is an interesting document that is worthy of careful attention. WHKBE would the Utah beet sugar plant be if tin- - scheme of that great aud good democrat. Holman, to refuse ap-propriations with which to pay sugar bounties linds favor? Oh, yes, tho plant would be at Lehi, but where would the stockholders be? In the soup. Where would tho Utah farmer who raises beets be? In the soup, too. Should Gkougi: of Wales die with-out issue a Scotchman would again sit on the throne of Great Britain, (the wo believe, is a boy). Englishmen might think this was a come down, but that all depends on the point of view. A good old Scoth woman when told of the marriage of Princess Louise to tho Marquis of Lowcsaaid: "It's a proud woman Victoria must be to hi-.- her daughter marry tho son of McCcLLOM Moore." The Logan Nation has now taken up the cudgel for Mr. Baldf.rston, lato editor of The Times. God savo Mr. H.W.DKKSTON from his fool friends. ' What a pity that he ("a broad minded man with foresight and judgment," as tho Kalion calls html became no dis-gusted with iho republican party in Utah that he could not bo induced for any price to remain and lead The Times on to triumph after triumph. Ex President Cleveland, in a re-cent speech, said he was opposed to "temporary shifts." He is inviting question of his democracy by his party friends in making such a remark, for tho party h is all unbroken record of thirty years, iu almost numberless in-stances, of resort to "temporary shifts." Tiik highly esteemed Logan Journal says Tiif. Times "proceeds to slap every mormon republican in the face." Well, The Times ins had some experi-ence with mormon republicans, nnd iu the light of that same experience would like to know who has a bettor right to slap the mormon republicans, and in fact the gentile republicans (division-isls- l of Utah, too, for they, seem to bo of exactly the same brand. Sly, the nicmlalo robber, was released from the 'cus-tody of the St. Ixmis police and turned over to the authorities of tho St. Louis county he having been indicted by tlic grand jiiry. The allow action necessitated the with, drawal of his application for writ of liahcas corpus. Sly was arraigned under the indictment found.
