XflBBHOBI IM.ANO KUB TION. Rhode Island is still in lino and the desperate play of the democrats to send a democratic successor to Mr. Aldrich to the senate have proved of no avail. The returns this morning give ;i clear republican majority in the legislature, and while there was no election for state officers the republicans have a plurality. A republican letrislature, however, means the election of repub-lican candidates. The results are extremely gratifying in view of the desperate efforts of the democrats to fpao a little prestige lhroiirh a victory there and at the same time increase their strength iu the senate. The gerrymander! no; acts passed in Michigan, Imiiana, and other stales, and the fraudulent elections iu the south, make it almost impossible for the republicans to gain con-trol the house of representatives. Hav-ing secured in that way the lower branch of congress, the democrats arc now aiming to capture the senate by a j similar means. The bold theft of the New York legislature and the gerry-mander that results from that robbery are relied upon by the democrats to give them two senators as a result of the campaign of misrepresentation in Wisconsin, and a democratic successor to Aldiu II would have been of mate-rial advantage in this campaign for the capture of the senate. The election of a republican legisla-ture, however, assures the return of Mr. Ai.DitJ.cii, who us one- of ihe Lest iu- - SMJLAKE EVENING TIMES. TYhe times publishing company. Dkake, late chief justice of the United Stated court of claims, who was found dead in his bed at Washington, was born in Cincinnati, O., on April 11, 111. He entered the navy as a midshipman in ls-7- , but re-mained in the service three years only, when he abandoned it to study law.and was admitted to the bar in 18:53. In the following year he Bottled ia St. Louis, where he practised his profession sue-eessful- ly --for many years. At the out-break of tiie rebellion he took an active and Conspicuous part against the seces-- 1 sion movement and became one of the leading nieu ia the republican party ID his state. In 1865 he was a member and vice-preside- nt of the convention that framed the present constitution of Missouri. In January, 1807," Mr. Drake was elected to the United States sen-ate as the successor of li. .' itat. Brown. Three years later came th' split in the republican party of the state, in which B.Gbatz Browm and Gakl Schurz led off one wing of the party, which finally became identified with the democracy: Mr. DRAKE remained a stalwart repub-lican and in December, 1870, was ap-pointed chief justice of the court of claims. To accept this place on the bench he threw up his seat ill the sen- - ate three years before the expiration of his term, although he thereby made the j election of the late General Francis P. ' Bi.AlK, a democrat, possible as his sue- - ' cessor. He remained on the bench of the cour' of claims until .January, 1885, when he was retired on the lull sal-ary of sooeo. Yesterday there was a promise that the mud would soon be dried up, aud the heart if mau was glad, but this moruinu; the heavens aro ajjaiu weep-ing. This reminds us forcibly that there will be lots of work for the street supervisor, and it is about time he was getting a move ou himself. Probably no man on earth has been more "cussed" by a long suffering public and certainly no one has ever been abused with more cause. The sidewalks iu many parts of the city are in a scanda-lous condition. At places they have for ten days past been absolutely im-passable. On West Temple, between Second ami Third South the mud has been so deep on the sidewalks that gum boots, knee high, were the only means of navigation. On the same street between First aud Sec-ond South, a similar condition of affairs exists. Down on Fourth South, just north of the Eighth ward square, the sidewalks are in even worse condition. At this point you take a sailing vessel or else walk several blocks around. The postoffice corner is also the cause of much profanity. Wake up, friend supervisor. Do a little work.
