Show THE PACIFIC CABLE. A Shorter Route from San Francisco to the Hawaiian Island Surveyed. A gentleman who arrived here from San Francisco today states that the Pacific cable project is in good shape and the cable will be put down just as soon as possible. The survey steamer Thetis arrived at Honolulu on May 30th, after completing the survey for the cable between San Franeisco and the Hawaiian Islands. The course comprised 20i0 miles, with 300 soundings, as against 2110 miles aud 250 soundings made by the survey of the Albatross. The San Francisco Chronule says: "The soundings were made at intervals of two, ten and sometimes one mile apart. The deepest was 322S fathoms, about 215 miles northeast of Ililo, and the sboalest was 976 fathoms, at a point about 450 miles from Point Conception. Were it not for this abrupt rise the course would have been almost level. r.The route traversed by the Thetis is considered con-sidered by the officers as the most practicable practica-ble yet surveyed." |
