The bank clearings today amounted to $3ob,lU; same day last year, $386,403. A Plea for the Shade Trees. Freeholders who object to the filling up of the Jordan canal, as contemplated in a motion before tne city council, are circu-lating a counter petition to be presented at the next meeting. As a cross-eomplai- the petition sets up: "Now, as the shade and fruit trees growing in our city contribute very largely to :ts beauty and impart so much shade and comfort to its citizens, and as they must be irrigated to live, and will not thrive on being sprinkled occasionally, to say nothing of the iuadequats facititics for sprinkling the entire city and the ad-verse circumstances of most of the citizens, and as the canal is the chief source of our supply for irrigating the trees and gardens, if the irrigating water is shut off our trees and other vegetation will die, and our city will lose its lustre and its citizens made to sutler great hardships." The Lead Market. Chamberlain's Report, March 30th: The leal markets have been firmer at all points, Pt but rather quiet. The secret of the strength is the short supplies, which bids fair to carry the prices still higher during the spring. At New York about 500 tons changed - Jiands at 4.15 and 4.20, while Chicago show ed 'Wduai quantity at 3.95 to 4. 00 and St. ; Louis hardened aUo to 4.00 under sales of about 090 tons. There seems to be at pres-ent very little inclination to speculate, so t that the demand is evidently from regular consumers, and had it not been for the ex-tremely dull trade all through the spring, prices today would be a quarter of a cent higher all the way around. The London market could not hold its own at 11 and 6agged off to 10 ITs. od , which equals 4.45 to i.OO duty paid laid down on this side. Pennsylvania Tourists. A six-ca- r special, consisting of four Pull-man sleepers, a dining and an observation car, came in tfiis morning over the Kio Grande Western on its way to the coast. The 1 party was a small one and consisting of only some fifteen tourists. It was in charge of Airent Colin Studds. The ladies of the party were chaperoned by Miss Bmirham, a lady of culture and refinement who has made numerous trips to the coast in this position. Mr. Studds said they had several cats more than was necessary for the party, but were taking them to the coast for the accommo-dation of a party of ninety that would leave there Monday for the east and arrive at Salt Lake Tuesday April 5th, at 4 p. m. This party will remain in Salt Lake until the nest day at 1 p. m. His Mind Gave Way. Patrick Mohan, an ex-poli- officer of Leatlvi'.le who has been struggling to re-store Lis faculties in this city, was thrown, into a condition of terrible violence last evening, whereupon lie was taken in cus-tody by friend. - This morning he was started back to his former home in com-pany with Sullivan and Johnny Piley. The unfortunate yoiiuu' man is hi-hl- esteemed iu Leadville and his friends her hope for hi3 early recovery. Getting Keail.v for Well No. 4. P. L. If we strike as large a body of gas there as we have in our other wells, it w-i- prove that the whole valley is under-laid with iras. Chamber of Horrors. A chamber of horrors has been added to the other attractions in Zion at the present time, and on exhibition together with all the blood-curdlin- g and avage legends that sur-round them are the guillotine, on which Leon Belmont was executed, the terrible racks upon which the victims were dismem-bered, the thumb screws that cail to mind the Nephi banker's late experience with the gold brick swindlers and a half dozen other sinister curios. Tiie Clover Dairy. The Clover Dairy company filed articles of incorporation in the office of the county clerk yesterday. It was a hen's egg, bat might have been the twin of the lay of an ostrich. Mr. Deskr said that the cirtr was the product of his brahman hens, and, producing a tape measure, demonstrated that it measured just tight inches in circumference. City Sexton Dunne. A formidable effort is being made to per- - peuiate. the reign of the present city sciton, Mr. Dunne, at the cemetery. He has been overwhelmingly endorsed and it is hardly probable that the new board will ignore the popular moyement in his bcha;f . A Territorial Silver Club. The organization of a territorial silver ciuo is bsing mooted.
