Special. Ditpatch to The Times. Pkovo, April 1. The day has been one of unusual animation for your southern neighbor neigh-bor the occasion being the territorial national na-tional convention for the election of delegates dele-gates to the republican national convention at Minneapolis. At 10 o'clock this morning the delegates paraded the principal thoroughfares with the Ogden band at the head of the column, and at 12 o'clock sharp assembled in the Opera house, the interior of which was imposingly decorated with the portraits of prominent republican leaders, natural flowers, bunting and other charming etceteras. After music by the band, Judge C. W. Bennett, ci. airman of the territorial committee, com-mittee, rapped the convention to order and called upon the secretary lo read the call. This having been done. Judge Bennett addressed ad-dressed the convention, declaring it the most important and the most significant ever held in Utah. His declaration that the national party had already recognized the party in Utah raised a storm and whirlwind of applaui e that for a moment threatened to unroof the opera house. The convention then proceeded to temporary tem-porary organization. J. D. Hammond was ! made temporary chairman, H. S. Pyne of I Provo secretary, and A. E. Buckley sergeant at arms. Chairman Hammond then addressed the convention. His reference to Logan as the banner republican district again awakened a gale of enthusiasm. Committees on cre-'Jf cre-'Jf nt,tals,Teroanent organization and arder of business were then appointed, after which the convention adjourned until 2 o'clock. The DelejrAtes Depart. The territorial convention of republican League clubs, which is called for the purpose pur-pose of electing delegates to the national convention at Minneapolis, aud which met at Provo at 12 o'clock today, in all probability prob-ability signals another chapter in the political po-litical derangement of Utah. The Salt Cake county delegation, that was recently elected at a county convention in the federal court chamber, went without a vacancy in the ranks at 9 o'clock this morning, and at the Union Pacific depot was joined by a full delegation from Ogden, the latter accompanied accom-panied by a brass band. Tlie field was tilled with candidates from both cities, and the indications when the train steamed out were that a spirited struggle for honors was on hand. "Do you expect to be admitted to the Minneapolis convention without a contest?"' was asked of a prominent divisioni.-t. "No, we do not," was the epigramatic reply. re-ply. ''We expect a contest; we want it, that the voice of the national republican party may forever set at rest tho question of republican organization in this territory. There can be but one republican party in thif territory and that's what this convention conven-tion today represents." "The anti-divisionists claim the same thing." "Yes; but they've reckoned without a stone in their foundation. We demonstrated thft in the fight before the national executive execu-tive committee, aud we want to demonstrate it again in the fight before the committee on credentials at the national republican convention. We have been properly and regularly admitted to the national league of republican clubs, we have adopted its constitution, its by lav and its platform, we have been baptized according ac-cording to the ritual and we are today a part of the national organization we arc under its protective wing, as 'twere." "Chestnuts!" shrieked a delegate, "that's what Arthur Brown said." "And he was eminently correct don't you forget it." "You mean, then, that the divisionists will exercise a monopoly on future territorial ap poinlments?" , "I mean that the republican party of Utah as represented in the convention today will wear the mantles and distribute the spoils in the future." uBut should congress determine to pigeonhole pigeon-hole the measures for home rule and statehood state-hood will not that commit the party's representatives repre-sentatives in Washington to the anti-divisionists and anti-home rule contingent." "We arc not advocating statehood and never have. Our purpose has been but one thin JE the dissemination of republican principles prin-ciples throughout this territory and the elfective organization of the republican party in a territory that by virtue of its material ma-terial prosperity must come into the republican repub-lican fold. The delegates all expressed their confidence confi-dence in the estimate seating of the delegates dele-gates that were to be named today. The Divi.-.ionist Democrats. The territorial executive committee will meet at noon tomorrow at their headipaarters in the Elks' building, at which time a call will be Issued for a territorial convention at which will be selected delegates to the national na-tional democratic convention in June. Judge N'orrell commenting on the ultimate outcome of a contest that is now recognized as inevitable, stated this morning that bd was prepared to bet a life's oavings that th delegations named by the divisionists and home-rule advocates wouid be seated. "We are a party of the national organization," organiza-tion," said the judge triumphantly. "We were received and formally initiated by President Block, Senator Forkner and Congressman Con-gressman Bynnm of the national league of democratic societies who came here for the purpose of organizing.
