With the beginning of the last week before the meeting of congress, con-gress, representatives are flocking to Washington Wash-ington in increasing numbers, and their presence is giving renewed interest to the speakership contest. The situation is now beginning to assume clear-cut lines, and interesting in-teresting developments may result any day between this and Saturday from consultations consul-tations which are now taking place. All five of the avowed candidates are now in Washington. The views of the candidates candi-dates show one unmistakable, fact in the contest, con-test, namely, no candidate at present has a sufficient number of absolutely pledged votes to make his election certain. Representative Hatch and party arrived late yesterday afternoon. Hatch stated to an Associated Press reporter that he was in the race for speakership in good faith, as the representative of his state and with the solid endorsement of the democratic, party. The headquarters of the various candidates were crowded w ith friends until late in the even- ing. There were no new developments 60 far as known. |
