Straupers cordially . a , invited to oil thesa services. . .van-rn- i airiMnii The eternal mill of hard work applies to preaching. If there be one principle which the preacher above oilier men needs to remember it ii that the sweat nf the brow is as needful for him who labors to feed others as for him who labors to feed himself. Erom nothing comes nothing. W'e cnunot get from the earth uuIum we give to the earth. There is a shame, too, which h.ingj round the idluuuss of the preacher, for he ii not only as one whose indolence indicates a liuveiily contempt for his hearers, ha is also a.i one who offers to give what cunts him nothing. I5ut this hard and earnest work must rot be supposed to be work within a limited time as, for instance, between one Sunday and another. The hard work which in remiisite goes far beyond thu range of the week or the fraim;-wo- t of the single sermon. The work ti the work of constant study and of the accumulation of material far beyond tho bare reiuire!nenu cf the sermou. This means that he who has to prearh must be of Rtudious habits, and iu d to his sermon he must uparn no tunc and gru k;e no pains. He must treat his diseouihe as the artist id treat his picture. He must study lor it and ha must make studies of it; he must cbusidnr detail and composition; b musi ruthlessly sacrifice tin: which would disturb the hnrmnny'of tho composition. He must be careful in the use of color, and while Keeking to give freshness he must avoid vulgarity or loudm-s- i of tone. That ia vuigar which so intrudes itself as to weaken the sense- of general purpose. If "tbiis oue thing 1 do" is the word of the apusliH, il may serve as a motto for tho preacher, whose wisdom will be to teach one thing r.t a time, and whose desire will be to make that one thing plain. The sermon which is merely a setting forth of some theological proposition iu relation to established christian doc-trines may be excellent hut inelfective. It is a treatise on doctrine, rather than a sermon. The bermon must enter ' to life. It must not only thrill with heaven, it must throb with earth. Ii must, like its diviuo master, reach humanity by bocomiug human. And as he must thus be human so must his humanity bo as tho human nature of his own times. The preacher luusf not be the reverberation of the thunder of yesterday. Cbureb Chimes. The y. M. C. TJio Poor Among Puers unci Sec-ond to Nono In this City Itt-v- it itlons Ilavo IioiiMi Issued by Mr. Edward Kollcy for tho Grand priilii;r of His ISew Sample lioom, at State Strect, The object of this demon stration on the pait of Mr. Kelley is to familiarize his new location and introduce to his numerous patron; and the public in general, the many new brands of fine imported goods that have recently been received at his new place of business. This establishment has just been refitted with elegant and costly fixtures and handsomely decorated in ac-cord with the balance of tho tasty surroundings. Mr. Chas. Keilley, the pop-ular and well-know- n dispenser of the bright and sparkling liquids, has been appointed manager of the new sample room, and will be pleased at any and at all times to wel-come his host of friends and acquaintances. Notwithstanding this new acquisition, Mr. Keliey still retains the proprietorship of the Elks Sample Room, op-posite the Theater, the only place in the city having a thoroughly equipped gymna-sium in connection therewith;, and one that is strictly first-cla- ss in all respects. The world renowned and) popular pugilist, Mr. Herbert) Slade, who is matched to fight! Charley Lange on July 3d, has assumed charge of the) new gymnasium and will here-- i after give this establishment) and its patrons his entire at-- i tention. Mr. Slade has many! friends and admirers both at! home and abroad, having for a long time been one of the principals of the famous John L. Sullivan combination. The sideboard which contains nothing but the finest wines and liquors will also be under tlie Moari's personal super-vision, ably assisted by a number of thoroughly com-- j petent dispensers. Mr. Slade is probably the most popular and best known pug list and all around sporting man in the West and has a host of friends among the fraternity. Col. Edw. Kelley is too well and favorably known to j need an introduction through the medium of these columns and as a pleasant, genial gen-- ! tleman he is considered by his host of friends and admirers as having but few equals.
