Show THK MAVOlt AND THE I'OLICIJ. "GeLtlemen, I have called you together for the purpose of talking over matters that have laid you and the administration open to harsh criticism-You criticism-You are a irood body of men, but efficiency won't stand in the fuce of internal discords. The conduct con-duct of the department has not been satisfactory to the public, nor has it been to me. You have a code of rules that every man should be governed by. If there is anything wrong In them you should report to your superiors. I believe that the men and officers should be treated courteously. There is no necessity for emphasizinir orders with pro-faniiy. pro-faniiy. If there is a man arnoi you who feels that he cannot obey the rules, let him speak out hand in his resignation before he is asked for it.'1 Majir Scott to the Police. This is to the point. The mayor has acted on the suggestion of The Times. He has taken the right course to quiet all dissentions in the ranks of the policej He talked plainly to them; told them some truths that they probably prob-ably did not like, but nevertheless they are very wholesome truths, and the men paid to preserve the peace of tho city will do well to take heed of them. The mayor is right in saying that the con-duet con-duet of the police department has not been satisfactory and pre-eminently right when he ascribes the cause to internal in-ternal discords. These discords must be harmonized and Mayor Scott has staried out on the right line to tlo it. |
