LITTLEj COTTONWOOD'S MINES. la Plata and Fish Springs District Have Some Extraordinary Nn?-ge- ts of Silver aud Lead Ores. Snlnhurets, ialena and Carbonates from Park City The Lead Ores of Bingham and Stork ton, Horn Silver and Chloride from Tintic, Chamber of Commerce and Private Cabinets. "The Farmer Sup-plies the Market but the Miner Makes It," Of all the exhibits at the fair there is none w hich attracts more attention than the dis-play of ores taken from Utah gold, silver and lead mines. And yet this display, which is much larger than any se.cn at previous expositions, is not what it abould be. It gives nothing like a comprehensive representation, neither of the different mining ramps or the im-mense variety of ores which they produce. k'iHitisa good showing, and those who ha worked hard to get it together deserve "nuch praise for doing so well in so short a time as they had at their disposal. The is under the care of C E. AVantland, and he it was who was most instrumental in collecting it. Of the districts contributing, Park City makes by all odds the best and most repre-tentativ- e showing. There is every character of ore which the mines Jlicre produce; it comes from the well-"know- n and almost unknown mines from the surface croppings down to the deepest point which has yet been penetrated. There are fome, other things too connected with min-ing in that camp which are interesting. One is a model of three sections of timbers 6uch its they are put in the Ontario shaft. An-other is a piece of flat wire cable, such as is used in hoisting and which will stand a Waking strain of 50 tons. A third feature which is interesting is a wax figure of a miner in full (miner dress, wearing rubber fat,-boot- s and hat. On him-i- s pinned a rard bearing the legend: "The farmer sup-plies the Utah market, but the miner makes it." On the wall hangs a frame full of pho-tographs of Park City'and all its mines, mills and hoisting works. In connection with the photographs of the mines, the underground topes and drifts are shown, thus giving a od idea of practical mining. It would be. imppossiblc to particularize very fully on Park's exhibit. The Alliance frhowg some especially tine specimens of its milling and smelting ores in galenas and the assay value of it being 300 ounces in silver and 40 per cent lead. Troui the Anchor there are samples of milling,cou--entratin- g and first-clas- s ore. (ileneoe has hrystalize quartz and galena. Other mines represented are the Silver Key, by pyrites; Lucky Bill, with smelting and milling ores; Mayflower, lead in lime; the Crescent has some heavy galena and chlorides;. the Daly iias ore from all its levels f'ora the 100 down the 9fH), of all grades and characters; the Ontario shows a great variety of milling and .melting ore running from 40 to 1500 ounces in silver. Then the Marsac. mill makes an interesting exhibit of samples of ore, in process of re-duction by Russell's lixiviatinn; it is shown as raw, roasted, crushed and in other stages until it gets down to a solution of silver which is as clear and thin as water. Bingham has a few tine specimens of the lieavy galenas, carbonates and sulphides produced in that district, but it is not so good or varied an exhibit as the Old Reliable could make. While Park City has the largest exhibit, Tintic showes by far the. richer ores. Nearly all of the prominent miucs there have con-tributed, and some of them exceedingly high grade ores. The Cleveland Consoli-dated has a d hunk-w hiet will run ounces in silver and (10 per cent lead. The. Bullion-Bec- k has t.ppcimeus "weighing from live pounds to 300 which are very rich in horn silver. I.c?s pretentious lead ores are shown from the. Mime. mine. The lied Rose and Northern Spy have rich chlorides, and the Kagle, Mammoth and many other nines have ores of a character. But the richest of them all is the hov made by the Centennial Kureka. Huge, boulders which will run T50 ounces in silver and 30 ounces gold, and one bi? specimen that average as.-a- of oive 15,iXX) ounces iu eil-T-and $40,000 in gold. For variety of ore and the number of mines from which contributions have been d. Little Cottonwood has a wonderfully tine, showiug. Seven boxes of specimens were received in which something like, lot) different claims were represented. It is au rxhihit which is attracting very much atten-tion. Stockton has a small collection of heavy jralenas and carbonates from the Mornin Mar, Mammoth, Bunker Hill, No You Don't National and Silver King mines. I'ntil yeFterday afternoon L3 Flats, took flrft place by the size of its specimens. V There whs one nugcret from the Sunrise. which w eighed 1920 pounds and assayed 5 ounces in silvpr and S.'J per cent lead, and another of the value per ton, which weighed 1 4bti pounds. V Rut this mastodonic display was t,nr- - passed yesterday morning by the arrival of a It consignment from Fish springs in the Deep creek country, the largest specimens coming from the Utah mine The ''daisy" of this V lot was a boulder of calena and chlorides. I weigni;ng '4ixi pounds and assayi:ng 400 ounces in silver and 4S per cent lead. Other pecimens to an aggregate of KHKt pounds. re show n from several mines iu the same I district. In addition to the special mineral exhibit collected within the past ten days, there is the cabinet of ores owned by the chamber f f commerce, and another belonging to A. r J. Ciishing of the Sandy sampling works. The. Mountain Chief situated at Morgan City on the Union Pacific has a specimen which assays 4i0 ounces iu silver. Box Elder county has ore trom the Car-bonate Hill which assays '20 per cent in cop-per. Beaver county is represented by an exhibit ef very fine chloride aud copper-staine- d ores ssaying 100 ounces in silver, 15 per cent lead and t2 in gold. Star district has pnld and silver ores from the Monte C'hristo mine, C. E. Wantland, who had supervision of the. collectio'n of the exhibit, and who is well posted on. Utah's mineral resources, is in at-tendance to answer all questions. He is by W. C. B. Allen, John Alexander, A. J. Cushinsr and James A. Pollock. Mining Kxehange.
