The seeoud day's session of the Utah Methodist conference confer-ence was held yesterday. In the forenoon fore-noon several reports from diifereni missions were read. W. A. Hunter was recommended to the Ohio conference. Martious Nelson, K. M. Muck, Johan M. Hansen and C. J. Heckcr were transferred from the .Scandinavian mission to the Colorado conference. confer-ence. The afternoon was spout in a temperance meeting, lievs. J. O. Peek of New York, W. A. Hunter of Eureka, D. VV. Mabry of Salt Lake and J. Wesley Hill of Ogdec were prominent promi-nent speakers who favored earnest and zealous work in the cause of temperance. temper-ance. The Ogdeu City band was out in full force and after parading the principal streets marched to the hall followed by a large crowd. Ilelfrich, the city treasurer, was aroused from his slumbers at an early hour this morning by the squacking of a chicken. He got up and saw two men watching the premises. After noticing their suspicious movements for awhile he decided to give them a scare and went to shooting. He tired three shots and chicken thieves got away as fast as possible. -H -f- -t- Whisky Joe and Billy George, two Indian police from Fort Hail came in last night. They had been to Salt Lake C.ilv to nee nhniit two Indiana who were recently sent to the penitentiary from here to await trial. The Indians are charged with committing an asiault upon a woman some time ago. The police are investigating the case. -- The carpenters and joiners met last night and decided to continue their demands. de-mands. 'This strike was made over a month ago ami the carpenters are still out. They demand nine hours for five days and eight hours on Saturday. The contractors will not concede, hence the strike. -t--- -f-Next Monday aveniug the Fidelity and OgdenCity lodges of the Ancient Order of United Workingmen will bave agrand musical and literary entertainment in this city. K. M. Heading, grand lecturer lec-turer of the California jurisdiction, will be present and deliver an address, -t- Yesterday was pension day at the county clerk's office. Over fifty pen- sioners were present and the clerk was kept busy making out papers. W. E. Flygase was selected as presiding officer of the meeting. After making a little speech he introduced F'rank J. Cannon as the orator for the evening. He made an eloquent speech portrayiug the beauties of republicanism. Tim audience was well pleased and gave cheer after cheer for the clear elucidation elucida-tion of protective principles. ---!--- At the last republican rally at Plain City an organization was effected and the club is now in iiue working order. Tbe officers are W. L. Stewart, president; presi-dent; Milo Sharp, vice president, J. Henry Taylor, secretary; C. O. Folk-man, Folk-man, jr., treasurer; James F. Wadarn and George D. ioikman members of the county ceutral committee. They expect to pull a majority of the votes in that precinct, as the republicans will in all the precincts of Weber county. -i- -i- -r- , Work is being pushed very rapidly on the electric street car line. Nearly one hundred men are at work laying track and finishing tho road bed. A shipment ship-ment of liOO tons more of new rails has been made from Denverand is expected everyday. One saw mill has a contract con-tract to supply i!00 ties per day. Throe new coaches are now lying at the depot ready for use, and it is probable that our walking system will soon stop. at the produce exchange John A. Boyle entertained Kent's Military band at his residence last night. Music was the principal feature fea-ture of the occasion till lunch and refreshments re-freshments were served. Future deals aro noticed every day and some dealers are iuclined to plunge deeper into the market. The sales noted were: Lemons, Lem-ons, 10 cases; eggs, i.f cases; manges, 40 cases; green vegetables, -'000 pounds; wheat, a cars; mill stuff, 1 car; strawberries, straw-berries, 50 cases; cherries, 75 cases. ------ Marshal Metcalf has received notice of the capture of onu of his former jail birds in Denver. Johnson White was arrested here for vagrancy and given thirty days. Tbe officials soon learned that he was wanted at Spokane Falls and a large reward had been offered for his capture. They therefore kept a close watch on him, but he gave them the slip by walking away from the back yard one day. -- -i- A grand ball will take place this evening in the Fourth ward amusement hall. J. 11. Hasspool and A. L. Hes-tinask Hes-tinask are the managers. F'ord's orchestra will furnish the music and lovers of such amusement will have a good entertainment. ---)--- Contracts were let yesterday afternoon after-noon for the erection of a new dancing pavilion at Hot springs. Joseph Gamer is the contractor and will proceed pro-ceed at once to erect a $."000 building. This popular resort has been in ueed of such a building, and when it ii completed com-pleted will be more popular than ever. |
