Show "When tho war of the rebellion was sprung suddenly on the country, ther were meetings of democratic committees commit-tees all over the north that declared that their country was more to them than their party, anil in a crisis of that kind it wsb the American's duty to stand by his country regardless of party ulliliatious." The foregoing appears in the Tribune Trib-une this morning in connection with an article in defense of alleged republican repub-lican committeemen who work against the party. The comparison is oue that is subject to another and much more direct application. There were democrats demo-crats who earnestly supported the Union cause, but at every turn the party opposed the policy of the government, gov-ernment, and it would have made the war barren of results If it bad had its way. As a party, tho democrats were devoted, when it came down to the pinch, to partisan advantage. So it is in I'tah today. There are men who are claiming to be attached to the interests of Utah rather than to party, but they are ready to subordinate everything every-thing to the benefit of tho old liberal organization. The men who have the best interests of the territory at heart have shouldered their guns and gone out at the call arising from the new order or-der of things, and they are not found skulking iti the rear watching for an opportunity to elevate the liberal party to power. |
