I'oncesions were iilado on both sides and the honeyinnon ajfiiin (ihowod a silver lun n above the dark clouds of married infelicity. The hus-band promised that the servant should go. Mr. Daniels remained at the. house v ith his wife for Two Mghta and Thren I)y, the only witnesses to this, however, be-ing the tw o colored servants. On the the third day the merchant had a talk with his lawyers, which resnllod in his brinpiiii? homo to his wifn that night a paper for her to s". stipulating cer-tain terms by which they should come together again. The lawyer accom-panied hini. Madixxa still cherishes a copv of this interesting document, to-gether with all tho correspondence which passed between herself ami her husband. Tim former stipulated that none of her friends or relatives should bo allowed to como to the house with-out iWr. Daniels' permission; that no purchases should bo made without the same; that Madixxa should clothe her-self and make all personal expenditures out of Tha 78,000 Korrlvrtl and finally a crowning blow that Mr. Daniels should have tho solo power of hiring or dismissing huuso servants! This meant everything to the tirey Spaniard. t meant that her husband had no intention of keeping his prom-ise to her concerning Anrio. n a few wcll-chos- i n remarks she told her opinion of that agreement ami em-phatically refused to sign it. Mr. Dan-iels announced that in that case ho Mould by the original separation paper. His wife reminded him that it had been nullified by their reconcilia-tion, whereupon the gentleman, in the presence of tho lawyer, absolutely d that anything of the kind had oc-- . curred, and that he had spent any timn with her. It is this point upon which the great law suit will turn, but awoke his employer. Mr. Daniels read it, arose, dressed himself and stanei i for that newspaper otllce with a speeil which brought him there in ample tim to kill the article which was to him been such spicy reading for his wife'' enemies. That he iustigatcd the stul! cannot ho proved,; but Ha I'ravvnted IU rulillratl.in. To those who thought the threat merely idle, and that his wife wnul'i not dare to carry it out, Mr. Daniels made one remark: ' She would have kept her word. J know that Spaniard!" This was a triumph for Madixxa. but the next day Denver hail a sensation, for the wife of tho merchant prince was arrested on a charge of threatening to kill her husband. ISail was promptly furnished by her friends, she stood her trial and the jury acquitted her as one man, although she had pleaded guilty and inlormed the judge that she would do so again under liko provocation and was willing to kill any man who would defame her. Shortly after this Donna Madixxa Daniels Sailed for Europe wheio she remained for three years. Hefore leaving she had placed her prop-erty in the hands of a Denver real estate man named Buskirk. Jlu lost it in speculation and tho unfortunate Span-iard returned to lind herself beggared. Five years after the separation between husband and wife the coachman, Mitchell, sued Daniels for alienating the affections of his wife Annie. Ho es-timated tho injury to his feelings as worth but settled for IO,0(K). At this time, during his tight with the millionaire tho negro signed an atli-da-to the effect that a re-conciliation had taken place be-tween Mr. and Mrs. Daniels afier their separation papers had been signed, and that the former spent three days and two nights at tho home of Madixxa. This is now in possession of his lawyers, and will be an important factor in the great lawsuit in prospect. Several times a Divorce Was Attempted and at imar intervals during the entire time the lawyers of tho other side have mado offers to tho young wife, but she preferred to wait, anil push her claims as a widow. Hor suit, for separate maintenance is still dragging in the Colorado courts, but, Mr. lianiel's death ou Christmas eve changed everything, and Mrs. Daniels is hourly expecting a summons from her lawyer to start for Denver. The tight will he a loag and a bitter one. Mr. Daniel': only son has just come of age anil his lawyers will contest every step of the way. On the other hand, the widow is prepared for a superb tight, and she has secured the services of the most learned counsel in Colorado. It will be a battle of men and money against a penniless woman, but the Spaniard fuels that she has justice ou her side. During the past year she has been living very quietly, suppoiting herself and her mother by teaching and giving a series of Monday evening talks ou Del-sart- o and the art of expression. The case will probabl) be a delicate morsel of gossip for many months to come. The M ile's Claim has been materially strengthened by an event which occurred live years later, and which will he mentioned later on. M Madixxa's refusal to sign tho paper Daniels left the house in a rage, and started immediately for New York, where ho remained for livo weeks. During his absence his lawyer came to young Mrs. Daniels and offered $100.-ii()- 0 to consent to a divorce, Daniel's idea lining to leave his oue child, a son, in possession of all his property. This oiler was promptly refused. Tho trouble brought on a severe attack of nervous prostration, which confined Mrs. Daniels to her bed for weeks. She was still ill at the resilience of her sis-ter owhen Daniels returned. Shortly after her recovery Mr. Daniels again left for New York, and in the hope that a reconciliation could be effected, his wife followed hiiu. Tho merchant put tip at the Cilsey honso and Madixxa took a suit of rooms in an apartment house Across tho Ntrest The wife tried in every way to secure a private talk with her husband, but found it impossible. Letters wero ex-changed, however, in one of which Mr. Daniels confessed that he had been in the wrong, but said that to publicly acknowledged it after all that had passed would place him in a very hu-miliating position. This letter, also, the Spaniard cherishes. Mr. Daniels remained in tho city several weeks but eventually left without having met his wife, Madixxa remained in this city and Went on the Stage, .Tiaking her debut at Niblo's as Belle-jjeiui-in "The Stranglcrs of I'aris." Oho played here for seven weeks and 'then went to Philadelphia to support Helen Harry in the production of "The I'atal Letter'1 at tho Chestnut Street theater. In the seasou of lSHa-'- she w as offered tho part of Marcelle in "The Creole," which she accepted. During the season she appeared in Den-Ye- r at the Tabor theater, and Madixxa's friends turned out in force to welcome her. She achieved a great triumph, was overwhelmed with lloral offerings and called out again and again. Daniels was Present modestly concealed behind the cur-tains of a private box. The auspicious beginning of the Denver engagement was suddenly checked by the illness of Miss ISIythe, tne star, which came on simultaneously with Madixxa's ovation. She was too ill to go on during the re-mainder of the week, and the engage-ment was cancelled. The leading man, ber husband, also became ill, and both left the company. Madixxa immedi-ately studied the leading part, which she looked to perfection, and starred with the company during the re-mainder of the season. When this ended she returned to Denver, having determined to reopen her claim and establish her rights. Seeing that it was impossible to effect a reconciliation, she Sued Her Husband for $25,000 a year separate mainten-ance, placing her case in the hands of Willard Teller, brother of Secretary Teller. Daniels' henchmen wero busy and began to circulate stories attacking her character as a woman in the hope of securing a divorce. After her suit was brought, in the spring of 18H:i. these attacks became more marked, aud it was at this time that the Spaniard wrote her famous let-ter, which was copied broadcast over the country. !She was then stopping at the Windsor hotel, and one dark night shortly before 12 o'clock she was summoned to the par-lor in groat haste, (ioing down stairs she found awaiting her a young man from tho stall' of a largo Denver news-paper. He had been one of her pupils before her marriage, and, like all the others, was an ardent admirer of his beautiful teacher. In a voice trembling with excitement he told Madixxa that he was on his way to the office with certain copy for the next morning's edi-tion and that it contained A Moat Bittnr Attack on her character. Of course his errand was secret, and his position would he lost if it was ever discovered. lie showed the woman tho article a cow-ardly, insulting effusion, in which she was accused of breaking all the com-mandments at once. The paper went to press at 2 o'clock. It was then mid-night, and the young man was on his way to the office. "Go as slowly as you can," said Ma-dixxa. ' ("live me all the time possible, and rest assured I shall never forget the service you have done me this night. Ho left, and the wife pressed her hot face against the cool window-pan- e and thought for five minutes. Then she sat down and wrote this letter: ' MlllNIGHT. Mr, nanlels; I have Just learne l.ou good authority, that you are about to publl.Hh character. If this Is done as there is a Gjd in heaven I will kill you the Brat time 1 you. DANIKI.S. She dared not trust a messenger, so she donned hat and coat, and walked, or rather ran, to Mr. Daniel's home, a distance of nearly a mile from tho hotel. She rang the bell, waited until she heard some one coming, pushed the let-ter under the door and then ran back. As she afterwards learned, Mr. Daniels' secretary came down stairs. He recog- nized the writing, knew that the must be iruportaut and Important Announcement.
