Show ON HIS WAY TO PORTLAND. A Heavy Oregon Healer Look Into L'fah Markata and Timber Districts. D. M. Clarkson, jr., one of the heaviest heav-iest lumber dealers on the Pacific coast, and a nephew of Hon. John S. Clark-son, Clark-son, lately first assistant postmaster-general, postmaster-general, who is on his way home to Portland, Ore., from an eastern trip is stopping at the Walker house. Mr. Clarkson gave the information to a Times reporter that the lumber business busi-ness in this city had quadrupled quad-rupled in the last two years, which was a certain indication of a building boom. On his visit east, Mr. Clarkson was introduced by his uncle to President Harrison and his cabinet, all of whom apoke with anticipations antici-pations of pleasure of the tour soma of them were soon to make. They were also enthusiactio of the great developments develop-ments the west had made in the past few years, and of tho great ueed of federal buildings in some of the larger cities to expedite tho conduct of government govern-ment busiuess. Throughout the east there was great interest taken in the entire en-tire inter-mouutain region and especially especial-ly in Utah antt Salt Lake where it was recognized that the bet developments had been made. Mr. Clarkson thought Ihe combination of resources here, were being at last fully appreciated. From C. .I.ileed of Portland, who happens to be. in the city looking up investments, it was learned that Mr. Clarkson had recently been made the victim of a dark scheme to defraud, by two sharpers who desired to sell a largo tract of timber on oue of the re- - loots mountains 200 miles distant from Salt Lake The two confidence men. w ho had secured control of a body of land iu the locality mentioned, represented repre-sented that it was a, vast expanse of magnificent timber, and they desrred to dispose of a portion of their Hcquisilian to some one who would put in a large saw mill.
