Show OBSTRUCTION PAPERS. Ptimiatcnt Attaiiip" by a Part of th Loral I'ri-M to lUrillt Salt Lake, Kditor Times: The follwing is from an eastern man who proposed locating here a plant for the manufacturing of woolen goods: "It senilis to me that the continued hostile attitude taken by your mormon papers to almost every movement of progress undertaken iu your city will tend to cheek your prosperity pros-perity and cause me to be uncertain as to your future. I don't know w hat to do; what is your opinion" He refers re-fers to tho attitude taken by the Herald and News in tho Ceep Crook railway question, in tho matter of joint city and county building and iu many other questions ot progress aud beuetit, oceans.) oc-eans.) of tho ignorance and sctisliueis of these papers are from nothing but opposition. it is possible and probable that tho owners of these papers do ini waul the citv to prosper. It is possible that they desire this city to be Himply a place of notoriety because of the fanaticism of a portion "of its inhabitants. If this be true, it is about time that the papers of progress take up aud sh.iw to the world why respectable citizens are called liars and thieves, and why almost every new enterprise is called a robbery or scheme to defraud. 'Hie subscription list published in the Herald "tho Oid Fort liend" is rather misleading for a stranger reader. Hotter call it "liend to retard progress." or, "in the undersigned under-signed put ourselves on record as being opposed to any. movement lor the benefit bene-fit of Salt Lake City." Ten years hence some of these people who have signed tins subscription list w ill blush very red should the Herald of today be showu them. There is no city in the United Mates today outside of Utah, that would riot welcome as a unit the projectors ot such an enterprise enter-prise as tho Deep Creek liailway. (ienerosity is tho spirit that, builds great cities and makes famous its citizens. citi-zens. If tho News and Herald aro acting act-ing as tiiey are through ignorance, why would it not bo a good idea lor the papers of progress to start a subscription subscrip-tion list to rai enoiiyh to send the editors ed-itors of the papers aoovo referred to away on a trip so they may learn bow cilii's aro built and the position true Americans take in regard to their fellow townsmen? It is going to be a light; and the new people who have conic hero within the last two years and the old ones, who have lived here for years aud whose life has been a continuous con-tinuous battle against superstition anil ignorance had better fully understand what this means, that the '-'(UK)!) priests ruled people cannot be looked to for aid in anything that breathes progress and glory. What have you got to say, Mr. Kditor? A. K. hkKh (ji.ks. Salt Lake, March 'it), 1WH. |
