The Felice 9tp tn nod a Riot la Finally Averted A Keduotlon of Ktfty Cent a lay la Rc.panslble for All the Trouble, There was a meetiag this morning between the striking linemen of the Electric Light company, and the men who havo superceded them, and that hostilities were not of a sanguinary nature na-ture is duo to the fact that thu officer put in an appearance. The strikers have been out since January 5, at w hich time Manager Dyer introduced the scale of wages that are said to prevail in the east 80 cents an hour, or about $3 a day. Prior to that time the men had been receiving $3.50 a day and the reduction met with such emphatic disapproval dis-approval that the linemen walked out. Their places were taken by non-union men and everything went quiet until this morning when the two elements clashed at White' butcher shop. The liuemeu were engaged in putting iu a plant when the strikers are said to havo made their appearauce. Threats were rained on the linemen and a riot was about to ensue when a telephone message mes-sage arrived at police headquarters and two officers were dispatched to the scene. The strikers without any further words retired from the fiohl and at present all is quiet. Manager Dyer was seen by a reporter re-porter and stated that he regretted very much the condition of affairs but he felt justified in all that he had dona. The new scale, he said, pro-vailed pro-vailed in all cities, and while he was at nil times in favor of high wages, he was the representative of a company whose iuterests it was his duty to subserve. Tho matter is exciting considerable interest and in all probability will be appealed to the executive committee com-mittee of tho federated trades. In the meantime the working linemen are under police or official protection and all efforts to interfure with them will be summarily suppressed. |
