Judge Anderson Booked for a Celebrated Case at Beaver Notes From the Court Ohamben The criminal calendar was reopened this morning before Judge Anderson. The prosecution was prepared to open hostilities in the case of the people against Charles L. Dlazer, the gentleman gentle-man who duped the officials of the Utah National bank when, the jury in the case of W. S. Hamilton vs. S. S. Dickson Dick-son was polled and a verdict rendered in favor of the plaintiff for i)0i), less $U()0, together with the interest and costs of suit. Judge Anderson said that the phraseology phrase-ology of the verdict was somewhat erratic and referred it back to the jury. The jury after an absence of fifteen minutes returned and rendered a verdict ver-dict in favor of the plai tiff in tho sum of $100. This fitted the statutory statu-tory requirements and the jury was discharged until 2 o'clock this afternoon, to which hour the criminal calendar was carried over and the following fol-lowing settings announced: People vs. C. L. lilazer, obtaining money under false pretenses. People vs. H. J. Crandall, larceny. In this cose the defendant was working for certain parties and took a pump which he secreted and held as security for wages which he alleges were duo mm. People vs. James Hamilton; crime against nature. People vs, John II. Jacli; assault to commit murder. The track having been cleared arguments argu-ments were resumed in the case of The Crescent Mining company vs. White, iu which the title to certain mining territory terri-tory is involved. A Complicated C'aie. The attention of Commissioner Greenman was occupied today in the hearing of the case of the people against Peter Smith, charged with grand larceny and arrested on complaint com-plaint of C. T. Nelson. Nelson alleges that some five weeks ago he left a wagon standing on the State road and awoke to find that it had disappeared. Yesterday Yes-terday he heard the rattle of familiar whools aud found the old rollers iu a bran new coat of paint. Ho at once demanded tha conveyance of Smith, who stated that it was his by right of purchase and this brings the uigger from the woodpile. Caurk Notn. The next grind on the criminal calendar cal-endar will be on Thursday. The grand jury is taking it very easy, and will not convene again until the last of next month. I'nited States Attorney Yarian looks much improved after his trip east, and resumes his labors in a manner that may well cause the defendant to shudder. shud-der. Judge Anderson goes to Reaver next week, where he will preside in the case of The People against Robert Parker, who is indicted for polygamy. Parker's case is one of the most celebrated that have been ventillated in Utah. After his indictment he made his escape from his captors and lied to England, where he remained until such time as he imagined his identity had been completely com-pletely destroyed. It was then that he crept back and locating in Ziou was recently unearthed by deputy marshals. Parker is now in the penitentiary awaiting trial. - - - |
