For a number of years the city of Indianapolis In-dianapolis was almost at a standstill. Tho panic of 1H73 was very disastrous to her interests, and the process of recovery re-covery was extremely slow. The de-presiing de-presiing i llccts of that experience continued con-tinued to bo fe it down to live year ago, and until that lime Indianapolis was one of the dullest cities in the country. Then a movement began for promoting the material welfare of the city, but it i was not pushed with very great vigor ! because not hacked by organized effort. The necessity for this being apparent, tho younger and more progressive men ot the city took things into their own hands aud formed a commercial club which iiickly developed into a very powerful agency for the furtherance of the city's interests.
