Among musical enthusiasts the event about which speculation is most rife, is the result which will attend Sir Arthur Sullivan's tirst incursion into the ranks of the composers of grand opera. This evening for the tirst time, "Ivanhoe" will bo presented. The most elaborate preparations have been made for its production, and it will see the light in a theater which has never before been opened to the public. The dual event has worked deep interest inter-est nil over Kugland. D'Oyle Carte has done his best in order to give a performance worthy of tho occasion; and it is stated on the best authority that it will not be possible for him to ring up the curtain on the opera under $2000 a night. Carte has given commissions com-missions to live English composers to write operas which are to follow "Ivanhoe." |
