Show BANCROFT, THE HISTORIAN, OEAD. II Dl.d Unexp.oterilj, Ilavlng Been III Only Three Day. Washington, D. C, Jan, 19. George Bancroft, the historian, died on Saturday Satur-day evening. He had been in apparently appa-rently better health this year since his return from Newport, than for sevoral seasons past, so his death was sudden and unexpected to all save a few intimate inti-mate friends, who knew of the attack of illness which carried him off. His death occurred at 8:40 o'clock. The end was quiet and peaceful and came after a period of unconsciousness lasting last-ing about twenty-four hours. Since his illness two years ago he had never been as strong as before, but as mentioned men-tioned above, had' been feeling extremely ex-tremely well since his return to the city. tst week he caught cold. Notwithstanding Not-withstanding thjs he continued to seek outiloo'r exercise every day until Thursday, Thurs-day, when he took to his bed as a matter mat-ter pf precaution. His whole illness was less than throe days, i His son, John C: Bancroft, who, with 'his wife, kept house for the historian, was with him iu the last moments. It was decided to hold the funeral service Tuesday, in St. John's Episcopal Episco-pal church. Tno interment will be at Worcester, Mass., where Bancroft's wife is buried. Mr. Bancroft regarded his life work as finished two years ago, and of late had done no literary work. During the last decade he revised his great work, the history of the United States, going over it in a severely critical style, and eliminating flourishes in rhetoric in the earlier, work. His last work was a history of the formation of the constitution. consti-tution. He undertook to write a history his-tory of President Polk's administration, in whose cabinet he served as secretary of the navy, but was compelled to abandon it.- |
