Nugent ha completed the company wnich will support Johu C. Rice next season in tha new comedy, A Knotty Affair." The organization is one of the strongest in the country, comprising, as it does, persons who have achieved excellent standing in their respective lines of work. The tour is beinq; very carefully laid out, and the general equipment argues well for the success of the venture. Mfss Rachel llooth has returned to her old part of Jimpsey, in "Natural (las," but next seasou she will doubtless have an opportunity to embark upon more ambitious tasks. She is a clever player of comedy, and beyond that sho possesses unmistakable ability in the line of pathetic acting. Supplied with material of the right kind, Miss Rooth will come along up the hill very rapid-ly, bpynnd any doubt. Mile. Uhea and her excellent organ-ization, after touring the extreme south-ern and western territory, are now re-turning eastward, completing the most successful tour that this charming ac-tress has ever enjoyed. It is said that Rhea has made a net profit, of between 4:i,000 and tH,(M)0 with "Josephine, Kmpress of the French," the present season. Next season she will present to the public two new plays. The first' is ontitled --The Czarina; or, Catharine the First of Russia," who was the wife of Peter the (lre4t. It is in this play that Rachel made a great success dur-ing the last of her career. Rhea has secured the original manuscript. The other new play will be a modern Jew-ish drama entitled "Judith." Mile. Rhea's success is largely due to the strong managerial work of Mr. W. D. Loudoun, who is coming to the front as one of the most astute aud ellicient mrnagers in the theatrical business. Jack S. Sanford is the representative in advance. A scheme for a Sunday theater is be-ing promatcd in London and is expect-ed to succeed. Agnes Huntington has closed her sea-son with "Paul Joues," and will soon sail for Europe The latest acquisition to the English stnge is Conitigsby Disraeli, a native of the famous "Dizzy." Brooklyn is to have a new theater, to be called the Columbia, and to be con-trolled by the Frohmans. A South American composer named Bernberghas sold an opera entitled "Elaine" to D'Oyly Carte. TheMcCaull opera company will try a summer season at Palmer's theater, New York, beginning May 11. J. L. Toole is back again in England and has wonderful stones to tell of his success iu Australia aud New Zealand. Gilbert Learock has been engaged for the summer season of the Wilbur Opera company in St. Paul and Minne-apolis. The play in which Pearl Eytinge will be next season is entitled "Vivien," and is a four act society drama written by her. Two well known New York dramatic critics are writing a play on the ject of "Dear Swift" for Richard Alans-iield- . Miss Eames of Boston, who is to be heard in New York next winter, has made her lirst appearance iu ' Faust" iu London. Miss Julia Arthur will star next sea-son in the new play, "Lorine," by Alice E. Joes, under the management of A. F. Arthur. C. Haddock Chambers' new play, "A Pipe of Peace," is a brief comme-dett- a touuded upon a magazine story by the same author. Sardou's "Tliermidor" will be given its lirst American production Septem-ber "3 at Proctor's Twenty-lbir- street theater in New l'ork. Iiia Sadler will star next season in a southern war drama, something on thd style of "Shenandoah," but with inci-dents bearing on the life of General Lee. Shenandoah is again breaking the record in tho west. Tho piece opened in Ogden to $'.IH7, which is the largest sum ever taken in tho town. Crowds were turned away in Virginia City, Reno and Carson. Marshall P. Wilder has been given his entertainment in connection with the performance of Kellar.the magician, who paid him t.V.25 a week for his ser-vices. Mr. Wilder sails for London May 13. aboard the Inmau liner City of New l'ork. The Emma Abbott costumes, instead of being burned up, as alleged to have been directed by the late prima donna, are being sold to various members of the theatrical profession. They are in the hands of Miss Abbott's sister, who The week at the theater has been a notable one. It opened with the three nights engagement of Milton and Dollio Nobles. The plays presented were 1 "From Sire to Son," "Love and Law" and -- The Ph.pnix." On Thursday Frohman's company opeued its engagement in "Men and Women'' one of the most powerful drsuias that have been presented in this city this season. The play holds the boards tonight. Ji week (Monday and Tuesday at Vlvate Emtnett will appear in Vfs of New York." She is the in ti in on the stage whose work behind the footlights has nothing to do with skirls, corsets or feminine gew gaw. Many actresses have assumed rualo attire (and made themselves more or less ridiculous) in short scenes, re-turning, before tho play ended, to pet-ticoats and banged hair; but Katie F.tn met t is the only one who ever played an out and out boy clear through a drama from the lirst curtain to the last. Miss Emmett's adoption of boy's ap-- - parel on the stage came about very jiieerly. She was stopping at an east-ern watering place several of seasons ago, when an acquaintance of tier's ,. proposed a wnger, the terms of which required Miss Emmett to dress as a boy and go about for ait afternoon and even- - ing. mingling with the thousands, with-out detection. It was promptly accept- - "ed aud a small parly of friends, wit-nesses of the wager, accompanied the . 'pretty young actress and the proposer of the wager on their rounds. Miss Emmott made such a charmiug and al- - together natural boy that she attracted a good deal of attention, many people turning to look after her and remark: "What a handsome boy." Having wou tho bet (the stake a sup-per for the party) was 'collected aud it was during tho discussion of the elab-orate spread. Miss Fnmeit being still in boy's attire, that somebody asked her why sho didn't star as a boy. The idea was warmly commended by every-body present, and so urgent was the advice of friends that Miss Emmet con-cluded upon mature deliberation to try it. Her lirst season in "The Waifs of New l'ork" was such a positive success that her use of petticoats and bonnets will be contined to private life for a considerable time to come. . The many of tho smaller towns admiring ma-trons refuse to believe Miss Emmett a girl ud wail at the stage door to see her along with the troop of worshipful .boys who are always there. Before "The Waifs of New Vork" is worn out it may bo that Miss Emmett will be compelled to call herself "Tom" Em-mett, or gome equally masculined name, in order to make the public think sho isu't deceiving them. AT wonderland. The best bill that has yet been pre-sented to the public is at Wonderland tills week. In the curio hall the Sanioan war-riors are tho crowning feature, and are well worth a visit, as for instance, the dance that is performed by the four na-tives is one of weird, wild grace, while their performances with the sticks are more than splendid feats of swordmen's skill. One. could easily imagine that he was in a barbarous country while stand-ing near the platform where these peo-ple are. The Orpheus quartette are a decided figure in the programme and also worth a hearing. The programme in the theatorium is an excellent one, and consists of acts done by Max, a German comedian, and the pictures of the siege of Atlanta, and Sherman's march to the sea. Tha , old veterans who see these latter say they are more realistic than any pano-- ( rama they ever saw. Wonderland is open dailv from 1 to I 10.30 p. m. I Proieenlum and Foyer. j Mille Price-Do- sails for Europe May . ,1. Hooker Wright has signed with J. j 1 K. Emett for next season, i Augustus Thomas and Sidney Roien-- ( feld have agreed to write a play of the lives in Chicago. Edward (J. Cooke, for the past four seasons business manager of Bolossy Kiralfy's attractions, has been engaged by the Palisade Amusements company ns general advertising agent for their big spectacular production, King Solo-mon; or. The Destruction of Jerusalem. "Mr. Wilkinson's Widows" is doing the leading business in New York at tue present time. Its receipts are thus far greater thau Alabama, owinn to the fact that the comedy is beiug giveu iu a larger theater. The first-name- d play will run in New York City until slopped by hot weather. The addition of May Yohe to the cast of U and I at tho Standard theater, has proven largely benelicial to the general performance. Her many admirers were out in force Monday night, and her reception was most hearty. This Is the last week of Messrs. Williams aud Kelly's successful engagement at tho Standard. John E. Warner, the manager of N. C. Goodwin's theatrical alTairs, is one of the most astute and and at the same time most dignified men connected with theatricals in Amorica. Mr. Goodwin's most successful season, have been plaved under Mr. Warner's direc-tion, and the present term will be the most profitable of all, by long odds. Mr. Warner is widely popular, in and out of the theatrical profession, and he I'urlty at Any Coiu Lewisiown Journal. The Minnesota legislature may finally be induced to abolish women alto-gether. |
