Once a iiiarter Mr. Hpurgeon asks ail the members to stay uway from the Sunday evening service, to give strangers an opportunity of attending. On those evenings tlcnie crowds gather outside the tabernacle, and the vast building is ' filled in ten minutes nfber the doors are opened. The church maintains 27 Sun-day schools, in which there are over 4000 scholars. Mrs. Spurgeon, the wife of the great Loudon preacher, though au iuvalid, is a fairy godmother to poor ministers. She sends gifts of clothing to their wives, and to the pastors themselves she makes gifts of books. The sporting solstice Is rapidly ap-proaching an equinox and when it ar-rives something will drop. I! will drop heavily and if the signs may be relied on there will be a whole brood of "drops" a sort of delayed April storm as it were. There are plenty of candi-dates in the field who are ready to shie their castors if the ;porting public will permit, but when the sporting publlo puts up its money it wants value re-ceived. e The latest bookiug is that which was made by Colonel Ed Kelley upon the order of a telegram from Parson Davies who is now campaigning the centers of sport with Jim Hall, the Aus-tralian wonder, who is hounding the footsteps of Filzsinimous and Woods, who is a protege of John P. Clow, who was finally knocked out by a bullet and his own follies. Acting under in-structions, Colonel Kelley has engaged Electrio hall, where the company will appesr on the evening of May 1 0th, under his management. The telegram also authorizes him to offer JH00 to any-one who will stand before Hall for six rounds. To this propositieu Hall is likely to get an "immediate rejily" from either of two sources La Blanche or Hilly Manning. No one believes that Hall can knock out either man in six rounds provided the stage is of standard di-mensions. On the contrary, it would be a guess in the event of a rush from either side, as a blow well landed would put some-body to sleep, possibly the l'arson has not discovered the fact'that these wen. are now haunting Zion. Again the question of supremacy will have then been decided between Jim Williams and Mike Sullivan and it is not improbable that the wiuner would give him a turn with HOO to pay hos-pital expenses. Hall comes at a day when the field is ripe with representa-tives of the ring and the deh' is bound to get an answer. e e The coming week opens with the ten-roun- d go between Sullivan and Mitch-ell that promises to be one of the hard-est matches ever contested in the east-ern country. What Sullivan is capable of is problematical. On the other band Williams has a list of victories in his belt and experience is a mighty ad-vantage. His followers are offering even money on him ami last night found but few takers. He has been training faithfully at the race course and was handled by Young Dempsey until a few days ago when Billy Mann-ing was addod to his stall, 'ibis bus stimulated contidence in him and money is eager. . The followers of Sullivan's standard however, have had no reason to relax their confidence in his prowess. George La Blanche has put hiui from tho first through a severe course of sprouts, and no man could have labored harder to reach the pink of condition than has Sullivan. The men both are as game as ever entered an arena, and the bat-tle will be a thrilling one. The match that overshadows all other attractions, however, is that to take place between La Blanche and Manning on the night of May 18 at which the Marine agrees to stop his antagonist in tea rounds, Marbuis of Queensbury rules. La Blanche is in training and has been for several weeks at Hot Springs where he has had the advantages of the hard knocks with Sullivan. Manning, who came from the south in fine plumage, has gone into train-ing also. Deep Creek, Stage leaven Stockton for Dugway M out) ay Wednestay and Friday at noon. Time 20 hours to Dugway.
