The effect of the death of Secretary Wiudom is visible in all the departments of the government this morning. While the treasury department is the ouly building build-ing actually closed, business is practi-crlly practi-crlly suspended in all tho others. The president is very deeply grieved over the loss of his friend, and this morning gave instructions that he could seo no one on business today. General Spalding, who is acting secretary sec-retary of the treasury, ordered the department de-partment closed for the day. At a meeting of the bureau chiefs and heads of departments in the treasury department U was decided that they go in a body to the railroad station this afternoon and meet the body when it arrived. A committee to draft appropriate resolutions res-olutions was appointed. The board of supervising inspectors of steam vessels was in sessiou here at noon and immediately adjourned out of respeot to the late'secretary. Ata subsequent meeting of the members of tho board it was resolved that they accompany ac-company the bureau officers of the treasury to meet tho remains upon arrival in this city this afternoon. The following" executive order was issued this afternoon through tho secretary of, state and sent to all the heads of departments: "Sir: Hun. William Windom, secretary secre-tary of the treasury of tho United States died suddenly last night in the city of New York, at the hour of eleven minutes past 10 o'clock, iu the Otth year of his age. Thus has passed away a man of pure life, an oSicial of stainless stain-less integrity; distinguished by long and eminent service in both branches of congress and by lining twice called to administer the national finances. His death caused deep regret throughout through-out the country, while to ihe president and those associated with him in the administration of the government it conies as a personal sorrow. The president pres-ident directs all the departments of the executive branch of the government and the officers subordinate thereto shall manifest due. respect to the memory of the eminent citizen in manner consonant with the dignity of the office which ho had honored by his devotion to public duty. The president further directs tho treasury departments in all its branches in the capital be draped iu mourning for the period of thirty days; that on the day of the funeral the several sev-eral executive departments shall bo closed, and that on all public buildings throughout the United States the national na-tional Hag be displayed at half-mast. |
