Show EACH WANTED TO APPOINT ONE. There War Twenty J oil km and Nina teen Appointments. Special toTin Timk.s. CmCAiio, Feb. 27. Judge Kettelle having returned from Hot Springs, the judges of the circuit, superior and appellate ap-pellate courts got together today and nominated nineteen justices of the peace. There was something of a squabble as there are twenty judges and each one wanted to nominate nom-inate a justice. A compromise was finally reached. The names of those selected will be submitted to the legislature, now in session, for approval. There is a disposition manifested in the assembly to chango tho manner of appointing ap-pointing justices, as well as to regulate their fees. This fee system has grown to be a collossal scandal in this city, Some of these justices, it is estimated, make from 925,000 to$:W,0(iO per annum. Even the judges of the highercourts will receive some attention from this legislature. Judge Grinnell. who is retiring re-tiring from tho bench to accept a more lucrative olliee with a great corporation, corpora-tion, has made a demand for a larger salary, for those he leaves behind him. A judge now receives $7000 a year but a bill has been introduced in tho legislature legisla-ture to raise the salary to $1."00(J. The measure will not receive serious consideration from the fact that tho opinion is general that a sulliciently large remuneration is now given to tho judges for tho services they render. Their hours are from 10 to 4 daily, except ex-cept on Saturdays and legal holidays when they do not hold court nt all. They have no olliee rent to pay and thev enjoy a vacation of two months in midsummer. There are always two or three of them absent for ono cause or another. Judge Kettelle was elected last November, lie was only a week on the bench when he was taken sick. He went to Hot Springs where he remained re-mained until today. His salary of caurse has not been discontinued. For these and many other reasons which were given by a prominent lawyer who is opposed to the bill now pending in the legislature, the salaries of tho judges will not be increased. |
