So far as can be learned he was not called here on public business. From the number and character of his callers at tho hotel, it was evident that his own political ambition am-bition was the occasion of his visit to the city. Since the publication of Cleveland's letter pn the silver question the friends of the senator elect have renewed their activity in his interest. They by no means admit that his election elec-tion to the senate places him outside the pale of available candidates for the presidency. Most of his visitors today took the liberty of advising him not to write letters on any question and to avoid making speeches as much as possible. pos-sible. If this state could settle the presidential nomination, even Cleveland's Cleve-land's friends admit that it would be given to Hill. Tho question the Hill men are pondering upon is "What will New York avail us if Cleveland has all the other states?" |
