The Ohio men in Washington are arranging a banquet to be given in honor of the Hon. Charles Foster, the new secretary of tho treasury. It will be a brilliant affair and will have some political significance. sig-nificance. The president is somewhat displeased at tho attempt that is being made by a few Ohio politicians to deprive de-prive Foster of the honor which his appointment ap-pointment confers by intimating that the portfolio was tendered to McKinley first. Although no official denial has been giveu to this report those who are in a position to bo conversant con-versant with the whole affair freely declare that the office w as not tendered to McKinley. The administration will support McKinley for governor of Ohio, iu which direction his ambition now lies, but it will not induce him to attain the governorship through a cabinet office. of-fice. Tho opposition to the nomination of McKinley for governor is not ouly well defined but is developing. For-aker For-aker is not yet out of politics. Sherman Sher-man will not brook such a formidable rival iu Ohio as McKinley would be if elected governor, nnd Harrison is not disposed to create possible candidates. When Mr. McKinley leaves congress in March an effort will be made to keep him in retirement. |
