McMILLAN, Clerk. ' ' Itr Ueo. D. Looinla, Deputy Cleric ' " - THE PERFECT MAN. As Described by tea Editor of the Nor. r ; York Sun. New Ycrk Horald. " I have receiceil from you a note ro questint; me to join a number of otlioi gentlemen in this country and in Ku rope in furnishing for publication in the Herald a reply to the subjoined ques-tion: What are the qualtitios essential to the development of the perfect man? This it a comprehensive proposition, arid the answer must bo expressed it generalities rather than details. It Is evident that tho perfoct man car only be one who has not inherited frou his father or mother or remoter ances-tors and deformity, moral, mental or physical, or any predisposition to idiocy, disease or vice. lie must be perfect in bodidy consti-tution, and in eating, drinking, sleep-ing, digestion, circulation, athletic etrentn-- ' and personal beauty. Hi temper must be sincere, choerful and optimistic; his position generous, ma r nanimouH and benignant; his tranquil ity and patience immovable, especially under the attack of fools; his delicacy o. feeling and his unwillingness to crow l others ve,n greater than his courage. His mental operations must be aggi es sive, rapid, many-side- aud far reach-ing. His reasonings must be logictil and sure, aud his conclusions wiso aud true. To all these, gifts ho must add iiuagin ' ation and enthusiasm, tho faculty that can fuse and transfuse, endowing even monotony and dulluess with novelty and splendor. Ho must possess humor aud wit; and of the two, humor is mini: tho more esspiitial. Jho inuividual to whom the sense of humor is denied l perhaps the most unhiqipy and lamen-table creature in existence. Of course the ability lo lovo and be !S?ved are his.' So far we have been considering only CntiM'al qualities and attributes; bill ihoso of education, gymnastics tind.iit---clopme- nt are hardly less important A genius like Shakespeare, if untrained uneducated, unfamiliar with tho dis-cipline of study and of social life, would bo liko a bird without wings or a steam engine , without fuel. Tho first rale man must have his powers expanded, complicated, strengthened, refined and subtilized by culture. He must go deep ami wido into the learned, the history, the philosophy nf men. Ho must bo in-formed of the ideas, the sciences, the theories, tho doctrines, the morals, the religions that have appeared since man-kind took possession of the earth; and this culturo must bo in his mind, not as a dry promiscuous accumulation hud-dled on shelves or in a storehouse, but distinct, vital, well ordered, ready lor application, whatever the occasion that may arise. The perfect man, thus fitted out by nature and by development, will possess a steady faith in the divine order of the universe aud in the progressive future of human society. To these qualifica-tions let us add active and companiona-ble habits ' of lile and a stead? income of $10,000 to SiiO.000 a year 'sullicient for the. needs of taste, aucction nnd benevolence nd our description of the perfect man would seen to bo toler-ably complote. Why shiauld not sunn a man keep hit youth, with all tho faculty of work and enjoyment, up to his hundred year? FURS. FURS. It Has Been Duly Proven that MR. ED. KELLEY OF THK ELKS' SAMPLE Never does anything by halves or enters into a project with-out successfully carrying it but to"the point, ' and a peep into the new Gymnasium, re-cently added, to his popular resort, will quickly convince one of the truthfulness of this remark. To the already well ar-ranged institution has lately been added a newly improved Peck & Snyder Pulling and Lifting Machine, which is claimed to be the very first one of its kind ever brought to this country, and which adds materially to the amusement obtained in this establishment. The gymnasium is now com- - ;OTtr1 until tl"lf rt-- i n tT-ir- i iLl. CLllva LljUiV-- mill w.iv finest of ' .everything that money can buy. The location is one of the most convenient and easily accessible in this city, and being only a short distance from the business centre and in close proximity to the Theatre, it can be said to be a ve:y desirable place to visit after the performance or between the acts, as one's con-science may dictate. Mr. Kelley is in receipt of a letterfrom the celebrated man-ager of .pugilists, Parson Da-vie- s, of Chicago, in which this distinguished veteran and shining light of the pugilistic arena express :d his intention of visiting Salt Lake some time in February, and the exclusive use of thelilk Gymnasium has been tendered the genial "Parson'' by the gentlemanly "Ed." for the purposa of giv-ing a genuine exhibition of the manly art of self defense, the exactdate of which has not as yet been decided upon. Jimmie Williams, champion of Utah, is in constant attend-ance for the purpose of in-structing those who desire to become j roficient in this the manly art. Mr. Kelley caters only to the first-clas- s element of trade and his friends and patrons are assured of courteous treat-ment at the hands of the em-ployees of this establishment. Mr. Kelley will always be found upon the premi-e- s to welcome his friends and pa--! trons, and desires to extend a hearty invitation to the gen-eral public. CALL AND SEE HIM Opposite Theater.
