Show CONFESSED TO A BRUTAL MURDER. How Three French Trlesti Were Put to Di atli hy Masked Vtlliana. ( 1'Altls, Sept. 18. Special. The po-. lice today arrested a hardened-looking criminal who has confessed that he is oiio of tho persons concerned in the horriblo murder which was recently committed at Nurni in Umbrla. The prisoner who made his confession without with-out the slightest excitement or apparent regret for the brutal murder iu which he took a part, stated that there was a convent occupied by live friars situated ou the side of a mountain near Lo Speco. It was iu the woods near it that St. Francis of Assise used sometime to wander about in contemplation. One morning recently two of the friars went to an adjacent village to celebrate mass. The remaining three, at noon as was usual with them, went to their dinner in the refectory. While they were eating they were surprised by four individuals with their faces masked, and armed with long knives with which they attacked the friars. A terrible light ensued with the result that one of the priests was beaten to death, another was killwl by having his throat cut, and the third was stabbed. A boy of fifteen years, who 'lived in the convent was also beaten to death. Tho police were puzzled puz-zled as to the motive for the crime as nothing had been stolen from the church or convent uutil the arrt-st of this assassin, who confesses they intended inten-ded to rob but after committing the brutal murders were frightened away. The people of Umbria are very much excited on account of the murders and it w ill require all the resources of the authorities to guard tho lives of the murderer when they are taken there fcr trial. The police are now conlident that they will apprehend the other three murderers in a day or two. |
