Show ; ' THIS flAT.TT.Alf US TIMES. SATURDAY. OCTOBER 11. 1890 .ZIZZZ:: ; THE FIRST FALL OF SNOW. It Came Down In Great Chunk on Sain and Sinner Alike. Snow began falling at noon today. It came down in great chunks alike on the saint and sinner. It flew in the faces of pedestrians and smartly kissed the pretty girls who ventured out dooi. This herald of winter reminds the im-provident of their condition and causes the coal clique to smile. The falling Hakes increased the juiciness of the streets and strengthened the army of men in gum boots and slickers. The snow has its own sweet will so let it fall. It will not smother the Deep creek railroad scheme or in any way hinder the progress of The Times. Fbe caff FrcTusWe Halters In Sail Lake Youman's Celebrated Hats. LINKED OB LOTS Judge Laney Buttons up His Mantle and Toes a Land Office Business With Cupid. INVITED TO HIS OWN WELDING Alternatives Embarrassed Couples t Evade tha Soofohing Tongue of ScandaL Judge Hiram S. Laney, who presides over tho destiny of the raw recruits under the mantle of ths police' court, has been having a merry round in the merry world of matrimony in the last thirty days, no less than ten conple havinir been linked for life by him in that period. Indeed, the conjugal wing of bis department has been the scene of a ohapter of thrilling life-lon- g hyphena-tian- s between the sexes, while the de-mand for his services continues stiff and firm, notwithstanding competition from the pastorates the court of record and the territorial commissioners' chamber. His Achates, deputy county attorney, says the secret of this lucrative tax on the time and attention of his honor is the winning and voluptuous manner la whloh the nuptial knot is tied. It - is done to slow, tremu-lous symphonies with variations that rise superior to the trill of the mocking bird or nightingale. At all events, fhere is a mysterious magio about the ' baptismal kiss of the court that darlna ' the month has put its seal of approval . and awarded certificates to the follow lng couples i James J. Robertson to Miss Lizzie C. Hout. Henry Blatteref to Miss Caroline Jones. Lorenzo W. Smart to Mils Minnie Fetorson .. J. B. Bushnell to Miss M. E. Fickle. Attorney Eichnor was malicious enough to insinuate that there was an acetic smack of the court's lips when he lm ' planted the Henry V kiss in this case. Thomas Cracroft Jr. to Miss Maggie Deppe. John B. Larson to Miss Louisa Mad-se- A. O. Swarson to Miss Jennie Nol- - . inn. I Walter J. Warren to Miss Mary Balmforth. James D. Edwards to Miss Agnes Caruthers. "Now this last certificate," chimed the court, "I have been requested to keep from the range of the news-spotter- It is , to Miss , and" "A very eccentric and I hope a happy coincidence," interposed Counsellor Eiohnor with a gleam of fiendish shooting from his left eye. "that the contracting parties should have looked tho world over to find their fate and join it with one foil . swoop without the necessity of chang-ing either name." "You don't understand me. You see " is not a name. It's a character used in typography, in printing, It's a aort of gaunt alternative when you want to oover up the names. Now you will recollect a olause from the old bard who is now slumbering over the pond, wheroin Juliet says while tallying Romeo from tho balcony of her father's brown stone front: 'Romeo, doff the name ! and for that, Which is no part of thee take all myself.' "Now, had Romeo been educated up to the standard of modorn eva-sion, he would have chirped, 'Why, you betcher life, Ju-liet," and in the local paper under marriage notices would have appeared: . Mariukd In the gardens of Mr. and Mrs, Capulet at midnight with naught but ths stars as witnesses and tho "envious moon" as mistress of nuptials to Miss "Now there would have boen a coup that would have settled all the Capulet-Montagu- o mess. The old man would have been outwitted and the lovers would have been just as happy under the popular name of Blank. But the Italians never have equaled the Yankee for subterfuge and I imagine you won't find such a name any place on their old classical records," v ' "Methinks I tumble," caroled the counselor. "Then blank is a proper name when taken from the matrimonial lexicon, and means to oover up, to hide, as it were, from public gaze and scan-dal's biting tongue?" "Correct, sir." "Then the twain whose names you are withholding from Tub Times man wants to cover up, to bide the act?" "Well, to be honest, I guess he was invited to his own wedding. You are the most obtuse man I ever saw." And the court, whose supply of blank marriage certificates has boen seriously diminished by recent inroads struck the telephone and ordered another install-ment in blank verse.
