Show MORRILL HAS THE TEN. The President Pays a Neat Compliment to the Kansas Han. Washington, July 1. The president paid a very neat compliment to Representative Repre-sentative Morrill of Kansas. Mr. Morrill Mor-rill is chairman of the committee on invalid pensions, and was the author of the disability pension bill which has just become a law. Mr. Morrill introduced intro-duced the measure as a disability bill early last winter, and under his skillful direction and persistent efforts the measure, with a few changes made by the senate, finally passed both houses and went to the president. presi-dent. The president took up the measure for approval, and when he was ready to attach his signature he telegraphed to the capitol for Mr. Morrill, Mor-rill, lie invited the Kansas congressman congress-man to come to the White House and witness the signature of the bill. Mr. Morrill, gratified by the compliment, accepted the invitation and went to the White House. He was present when the bill was signed, and as a further testimonial, President Harrison presented pre-sented to Mr. Morrill the pen with which the signature was attached. The "Morrill pension bill," as it is known, carrying an annual appropriation appropria-tion of about $50,000,000 for the old soldiers, sol-diers, thus becomes a law, and Mr. Mori-ill, the author of the measure, will no doubt treasure as a memento the pen with which the bill was signed by the president. |
