William i Greenbaum, sou of a millionaire merchant mer-chant of tli'ts city, has juat roar hod home after a lively experience in the Olympia mountains of Washington, during which ho was tracked by a mountain lion, and was five days without with-out food. Greenbaum is a commercial traveler, and, having a few days to spare at Seattle, joined a party exploring the mountains. One day ho bucame lost. Search parties were soul out, and one of these found him on the fifth day. Ho lost himself within a quarter of a mile of camp. When without arms, while resting near nightfall, ho was attacked by a big mountain lion. Greenbaum plunged down the mountain side into a large creek and waded down this, the lion following him on shore. His only weapon was a small pocket-knife. It was fast growing dark. Watching when the lion was extricating himself from a swampy point, Greenbaum swam to the opposite shore and built two bonfires against the base of the cliff. Between the tires he spent tho night watching for the lion, which had been frightened off by the flames. Tho next morning he hunted all day for camp. At night he again built a tire to keep off wild beasts. On the fifth day he made a bow and arrow and shot a robin and drank its blood. As he was fishiug in tho stream that he was following fol-lowing to salt water, ho was found by a searching party. They had to feed him carefully at tirst as he was nearly famished. |
