A beautiful thing in the way of "lino hand-wor- is a handkerchief embroid-ered on liue linen by Miss Wareing. while an other in the'same line is a set of lace work by Mrs. Kellog. One of the daintiest and most effect-ive things in the collection is a dresser set iu pink silk with white appique bv Mrs. Ilolliday of Prove Our home merchants are fairly well represented. It is as yet impossible to ;ive details regarding their exhibits, as very few of them were ready for the opening. There was no excuse for this as they were right on the ground and should by all means have been ready. Outside the main building was a sight calculated to delight the heart of the stock man. t The air was vocal with the neighing of horses, the lowing of cows and the bleating of sheep. The exhibition of stock is large and probably superior to any ever be-fore seen in Salt Lake City. The new pavilion is a thing of beauty and tills a want felt at least the two previous years. From it the lovers of good stock may view the graceful antics of aristo-- 1 cratio cattle and horses that traco their pedigrees back to the flood. The display of poultry is small but excellent. The usual number of fakirs were present. The popcorn man, the peanut vender, the man who sells cider and weak lemonade and the steam carousel all got in their work. - 11 GATESARE OPEN1 the Great lair is Inaugurated Under the Most Favorable AuBpioes. 60ME OF THE BEST EXHIBITS. 4 Busy Scene in the Main Building Some Fine Stock in the Stalls Art and Industrial. The fair opened up at noon today un-de- r the most favorable auspices. The weather is beautiful and promises to continue so through the entire week. The attendance was large and is cert-ain to be much larger tomorrow. When the gates were opened at 12 o'clock this morning there was a crowd of fully 300 peoplo- waiting. Many of them had ceen waiting since 0 o'clock this morning. Iuside there was a busy scene all morning. Everything was hurry and bustle, in the rush to, get everything ready for the opening. In spite of the utmost exertions, however, there still remained much to do when the hour for opening the doors arrived, and it will be late tonight before everything is shipshape. Promptly at 12 o'clock the band d on the scene and took its place but it was one before the formal openi-ng exercises wore gotten under way. Prayer was offered by Arthur Stayner. Governor Thomas then made an ad-dress: It was brief and to the point. He congratulated the people of Utah upon the excellent exhibit of their varied products' and predict-ed the day when Utah would stand in the front ranks of 'American common-wealths. President Henry W. Lawr-ence then officially declared the fair opened, and the band played. Iuside the great exposition building was spread out a veritable scene from fairy land. The exhibits wre arranged with the utmost regard to symmetry and harmony of ... color. .Flowers and fruits added variety and gave color to the whole. Long festoons pf bright bunting hung from the galUry and draped in graceful curves from the ceiling. '. . The most notable exhibits were those of Utah fruits and vegetables. They caught the eye the moment one entered fhe hall. Bow after row of apples-so- me pale of hue and others of the most ruddy variety sat side by Bide, Lnt nvoi. tham wnro nvramids Utah's mineral wealth mado. , A peep into the art deportment re- - I;l SGIu,larllill 8ms from the home artists, and the num-bering of the pictures and the printed catalogues evince an improvement in this p;trt of the exhihition deserving of especial commendation. Perhaps the most striking picture in the exhibition is tlio head of a French actress by Will Clawson. It is copied from a photo-graph, and portrays a girl in the lirst maturity of womanhood. Thodelecatoly clusled, fair tinted face is shaded by ':i broad-brimme- rough, straw hat, the outline qf which is softened by a bil-lowy plume. Tho hair is parted over the high, white forehead and ripples back in soft waves to the mass of cuiils falling down on the, 'Shoulders. The dress is of palest lavender and rich pansy purple, and the background shades from stone gray to an indescribable pearl, while around the shoulders is a halo of light that is the nearest thing to yellow sun-shine that oil and brushes can make. Two othar pictures by tho same ar-tist, "Dreaming" and Time," are on an entirely different method from any other of his work that has been seen here and looks decidedly Freuchy. They represent nude figures of two ravishingly beautiful women, and are very clever pieces of work. Just below these are three heads by Margaret Foster, a girl of 10, who has just finished a course of study in Germany. They are very fine and predict a brilliant futurd for the young ladies. "Lake Shore from Antelope Island" and "Salt Lake valley" by H. L. A. Culmer give us something new in the way of land-scape work in portal and are very good indeed. The painting by him in oil called "Lowering Clouds" has ono of the finest distance effects to bo seen in any picture in the collection. It shows a better stretch of valley in the sombre light of a d sky while on the very edge of the horizon is one dazzling glow of light Among the best things injportrait paint-ing is a picture of his wife by Mr. Will Browning. It is a half length figure clothed in warm plushes and furs. In the most graphic and easy poses it looks down demurely at the passer-by- . Four water colors by Miss Gorlinski would command attention in tho tcadoray of design in New York. No one of our local artists show the artistic arrange-ment and dainty effects to be seen in Miss Gorlinski's work. In his quaint picture which he calls "A French Village," Mr. Harwood has given us an expression of the latest methods of French landscape painting. It differs from the old school in its sunshine and opaque shad-ows. His "Reapers" is one of the finest things in the whole collection. Indeed every picture he has sent in merits special and warm praise. George Baird's picture "The Felons" is an ambitious work and has some very good features, but taken as an en-tirety it lacks "air" and gives the effect of being painted too much from the of peaches mammoth peach turning their blushing cheeks one to the other. Great clusters of grapes were twined around them grapes large and lus-ciousmore tempting in appearance than any that ever clustered on the sunny hills of the Rhineland or bound the brow of Bacchus crowned and drunken. There were vegetables galore. Potat-oes that were almost as big as pumpkins and pumpkins that would rank as giants even among big pumpk-ins. A quaint design was a bed or lettuce on the top of which was twined a serpentine cucumber. The display of jellies and canned and preserved fruits was also an excellent one, and the cups and jars filled with the rich colored compounds had a most tempting appearance. There were some very quaint designs in floral exhibits. One was especially noticeable. It consisted of a U. S. flag made of flowers. In the same set was gigantic fan of various hued dahlias, and just near were great beds of pvt flowers of every hue. The exhibition of the mineral output of Utah is hardly what was expected. The principal part of it came from the chamber of commerce. That is excell-ent and covers the field thoroughly, it was however, hoped that there would We been much more private enter-prise displayed and a Dig show of Two figures by Mrs. Arthur Brown a Greek dancing girl and tho head of a Russian deserve special mention, the latter being one of the best things shown, Mr. Ottinger's large picture, Cobeza do Voca in tho land of Cibola, is of es-pecial interest, not only as a work of art but as illustrating one of the most interesting episodes in tho history of our country. Some very good work in water colors are the little sketchy scenes from Cali-fornia do ne by Miss Kingsbury, while her basket of lilacs is the best oil paint-ing of flowers on exhibition. It is a picture that no ono can see without ad-miring. . Two designs are exhibited in compe-tition for the prize offered by the Nalional bank for a public foun-tain The subject is "The Pioneers-a-it is to cost $10,000. Ihe onedis-- p aved by J. Jeperton is rather good, as there are only two exhibited, will probably take the prize. The fancy work department is brilli-ant in silks and plashes, scarfs lam-brequins and quifts vieing with each in richness of material and orig-inality of design.
